About Oliver North
During his service in the Vietnam War, North was a platoon commander, and he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, and two Purple Heart medals. In addition, he was given the Combat V for the Bronze Star Medal. When he was being honored with the Silver Star, Private First Class North was serving as a platoon commander and directing his Marines in Operation Virginia Ridge.
North was born on October 7, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas. His parents, Ann Theresa (née Clancy) and Oliver Clay North, both served in the United States Army, and he is their son. He attended Ockawamick Central High School and grew up in the town of Philmont, New York, where he graduated in 1961.
During his time at Brockport, North attended the United States Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. As a result of his performance there, he was offered a position at the United States Naval Academy in 1963. North graduated from Brockport in 1963.
In 1970, North went back to South Vietnam to testify as a character witness at the trial of Lance Corporal Randall Herrod, a United States Marine who had served under North’s command previously and who, along with four others, was accused of killing sixteen Vietnamese civilians in the village of Son Thang. North’s testimony was given at the trial of Herrod.
North asserts that Herrod had once rescued him from certain death. Herrod and one other Marine were found not guilty of the charges before them. Between the years 1981 and 1983, North worked as a lobbyist for the National Security Council staff in Washington, D.C. After that, he was promoted to the position of deputy director for political–military affairs, a position he held until he was reassigned in 1986. North’s next assignment was in 1986. In 1983, North was given the rank of lieutenant colonel after receiving a promotion.
During the election that took place in 1994, North represented the Republican Party as the candidate for the state of Virginia’s seat in the United States Senate. His campaign was not successful. Marshall Coleman, a Republican who ran as an independent, had the endorsement of Republican senator John Warner of Virginia, who opposed North’s candidacy. North did not win the race and received 43 percent of the vote, while the incumbent Democrat Charles Robb, who is the son-in-law of former President Lyndon B. Johnson, received 46 percent of the vote and gained reelection. Coleman was awarded 11% of the vote. The campaign that North ran for president was chronicled in the film A Perfect Candidate, which was released in 1996.
In 1994, North made an unsuccessful bid for the seat in the United States Senate that was held by Chuck Robb from Virginia. He received 43% of the vote. After that, he was the host of a discussion show on Radio America between the years 1995 and 2003, and he was the host of War Stories with Oliver North on Fox News between the years 2001 and 2016. In May of 2018, North was chosen to lead the National Rifle Association after running unopposed for the presidency. Carolyn D. Meadows took up the role when he stepped down on April 27th, 2019, in the midst of a disagreement with the company’s chief executive Wayne LaPierre. She is the current president of the organization.
