Former NFL wide receiver and current American sports broadcaster Michael Jerome Irvin. Irvin was taken by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft while playing college football at the University of Miami.
Michael Irvin, a wide receiver who played for the Dallas Cowboys for 12 seasons, was a star on and off the field. His ability to make plays as a vital component of three NFL championship teams was surpassed only by his frequently publicized fast-paced lifestyle. And regrettably, his repeated run-ins with the law, including multiple arrests, will always cast a shadow over some of his finest achievements.
Irvin, one of 17 siblings, played for St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he received All-State recognition, before enrolling at the University of Miami. He established a number of records while being coached by head coach Jimmy Johnson and assisted the Hurricanes in capturing the 1987 National Championship. Irvin established Miami career records for catches (143), receiving yards (2,423), and touchdown receptions in just three seasons as a starter (26).
Irvin was chosen by the Cowboys with the 11th overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft following a highly successful collegiate career, but his professional career got off to a sluggish start. Irvin struggled to participate in the offense during much of his first three seasons due to injuries, but in 1991, his fourth season in the league, Irvin led the league in receiving yards with more than 1,500 yards.
The outspoken Irvin helped the Cowboys win the Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX with roughly 1,300 yards receiving on average over an eight-year span beginning with his breakout year. With 750 receptions for 11,904 yards and 65 touchdowns, he completed his career. Moreover, he was chosen to participate in five Pro Bowls.
Irvin’s career’s low points occurred off the field. As far as we can tell, he had some crazy years, particularly in the 1990s and the early 2000s, and was frequently detained.
