In 1979, Matt Lauer left Ohio University to begin his television career as the producer of the noon news at WOWK in the Charleston/Huntington, West Virginia, DMA. He soon started providing on-air reporting for the channel.

He was a guest on several PM Magazine programs that aired in Richmond, Virginia, commencing in the 1980s. Then it went off to host other events in Providence, Rhode Island, and New York City.
