About Mary Ann Mobley
After Dixie Carter’s departure from the show, she succeeded her in the role of Maggie McKinney Drummond on Diff’rent Strokes, where she appeared in several episodes throughout the show is final season. On the television show Diff’rent Strokes, season 2, episode 24, she had the role of Arnold’s teacher.
In one of Carter’s later series, Designing Women, Mobley appeared as a guest star as the caustic head of a historical organization named Karen Delaporte. In this series, Mobley and Carter’s character, Julia Sugarbaker, engage in a battle of wits. In 1965, she appeared in the films Girl Happy and Harum Scarum, both of which starred Elvis Presley.
Mobley spent her childhood in Brandon, Mississippi, and received her high school diploma from Brandon High. She attended the University of Mississippi, where she was a part of the Chi Omega sorority and was honored with induction into the University of Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame in the year 1981.
Following her year as Miss America in 1959, Mobley began a career in the entertainment industry, working in both film and television. She committed to MGM for the next five years by signing a contract. Be Our Guest, which aired in 1960, was the show in which she made her debut on television. Between 1963 and 1965, she made a total of five appearances on Burke’s Law.
In the opening episode of the first two-part season of Mission: Impossible, which aired in 1966 and was titled “Old Man Out,” she appeared as a female guest star. After that, she went on to star in a number of episodes of Perry Mason, Love, American Style, and Fantasy Island. Mobley was the first person from Mississippi to be awarded the title of Miss America, and she did it in 1959. She also took home the national talent prize.
In 1965, she was honored with the Golden Globe Award in the category of New Star of the Year – Actress. As a result of her involvement in a wide variety of humanitarian organizations, Lady Bird Johnson presented her with the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award in 1966. In 1967, she tied the knot with the actor and television host Gary Collins at the Brandon United Methodist Church.
After reconciling and moving back in together in 2010, the couple continued to live in Biloxi until Collins passed away on October 13, 2012. Mary Clancy Collins was the couple’s only child together after they had a daughter. In addition, Mobley took on the role of stepmother for Melissa Collins and Guy William Collins, two of her husband’s children from a previous marriage.
In addition, Mobley was a celebrity panelist on Match Game from 1973 through 1977, making appearances on the show on occasion between those years. Mobley, along with her husband Gary Collins, was a co-host for the Pillsbury Bake-Off that aired on CBS from 1984 through 1988.
In September 1988, the year that marked the 30th anniversary of Mobley’s own victory in the Miss America pageant, she joined her husband Gary Collins as a co-host for the 1989 edition of the pageant. She made an appearance in the documentary film Miss America, which was shown on the episode of American Experience that aired on PBS on January 27, 2002.
Mobley suffered from Crohn’s disease and was an advocate for medical research and treatment advancements at various points in her life. In 2009, she received treatment for breast cancer that was in the Stage III advanced stage. Breast cancer took Mobley’s life on December 9, 2014, and she passed away at her home in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 77.
