About Mackenzie Phillips
Phillips has struggled with substance misuse for most all of her life. After passing past the screening at the airport security checkpoint on August 27, 2008, she was subsequently taken into custody by the Los Angeles Airport Police and charged with possession of cocaine and heroin. After the publication of Phillips’s autobiography High on Arrival in September 2009, she was a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show for a conversation that lasted for the whole duration of an hour.
She revealed to Winfrey that she had her first experience with cocaine when she was 11 years old, and that her father had taken drugs with her and had also injected her with cocaine. She also stated that her mother had also experimented with drugs at a young age.
Phillips was just 12 years old when American Graffiti was being filmed, and she was 13 years old when the movie was finally released. She was cast in the role of Carol Morrison, a little girl who was picked up by a teenage hot rodder named John Milner by accident. Because of the laws that apply in the state of California, the film’s producer, Gary Kurtz, was appointed as Phillips’ legal guardian for the period of filming.
In the 1970s, Phillips rose to fame for her role as the young Julie Cooper on the long-running television drama One Day at a Time. After the character was married, she took the surname Horvath, and Phillips was paid a weekly salary of $50,000 which is equivalent to $251,793 in today’s dollars.
Phillips voluntarily checked himself into Fair Oaks Hospital for treatment after suffering two overdoses that came dangerously close to taking her life. In 1981, the creators of “One Day at a Time” extended an invitation to her to return to the cast of the show. Phillips returned into cocaine use in 1982, and the following year, she fell on the set of the show due to the effects of her addiction. She was sacked from her job permanently after she refused to submit to a drug test, and her character was removed from the series as a result. In 1992, Philips checked himself into a drug rehabilitation center and stayed there for nine months.
At the awards banquet for the closing night of the Female Eye Film Festival, which took place on March 20, 2011, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Phillips was presented with an Honorary Best Actress award for her portrayal as Sharon in the indie film Peach Plum Pear, which was released in 2010. While she was in Toronto, she granted interviews to a number of Canadian television programs, including Canada AM, ET Canada, and The Marilyn Denis Show.
In the year 2016, Phillips started working as a drug rehabilitation counselor at the Breathe Life Healing Center, which is located in West Hollywood, California. In 2017, Phillips made a guest appearance on the newly rebooted version of One Day at a Time playing the role of Pam Valentine. Given Phillips’s background, the part she played—that of a counselor—was an excellent fit.
In 2018, Phillips made many appearances on Orange Is the New Black, an original series on Netflix, playing the role of Barbara Denning. In 2019, she appeared in two episodes of the third season of One Day at a Time, reprising the part that she had played in the previous season.
