About Loretta Swit
Swit made her debut in an off-Broadway production for the first time in “An Enemy of the People.” It was staged at Actor’s Playhouse. In 1961, Swit was cast in a role in the Circle in the Square production of “The Balcony” which was written by Jean Genet and staged by José Quintero. Swit is performance was a highlight of the show.
In 1955, she received her diploma from Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic, where she had been a cheerleader. She participated in theatrical productions, and was a co-captain of the women’s basketball team. She had also attended Passaic State College.
In June of 1957, she received her diploma from the Katharine Gibbs School, which was located in Montclair, New Jersey. After graduation, she worked in a variety of clerical jobs, including one in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where she was employed as a stenographer. She attended Gene Frankel’s theater classes in Manhattan, which are located in New York City, and she considered him to be her acting mentor. Throughout her career, she made it a habit to stop by his studio and have conversations with young actors in training. Swit is not only an actor but also a singer, and she received her vocal training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
During the year 1967, Swit was a member of the national touring company of the play Any Wednesday, which starred Gardner McKay. She maintained her role as one of the Pigeon sisters in a production of The Odd Couple that ran in Los Angeles, starring opposite Don Rickles and Ernest Borgnine.
When Swit first moved to Hollywood in 1969, she began appearing in guest appearances on a number of different television shows. Some of these series include Hawaii Five-O (her first TV credit), Gunsmoke, and Mission: Impossible and Mannix.
Swit played the role of the lusty and incredibly talented head nurse Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the television series MAS*H, which began airing in 1972. The series was a comedy that took place in a United States Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. Swit took up the career-making part that had previously been portrayed by actress Sally Kellerman in the feature film, who had played Houlihan.
Swit appeared in the 1975 Broadway production of Same Time, Next Year, which Ted Bessell starred in.
In addition, she appeared in the Broadway production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” After that, she got the role of Agnes Gooch in the Las Vegas adaptation of Mame, which starred Susan Hayward at first and then Celeste Holm later on. She has been performing the one-woman show Shirley Valentine since the 1990s and has continued to do so into the 2010s, appearing in a number of different places and revivals.
In 1981, Swit portrayed Christine Cagney in the movie pilot for the television series Cagney & Lacey. However, due to contractual constraints, Swit was unable to continue in the role after the pilot episode aired. Actress Meg Foster played the character of Cagney for the first six episodes of the television series before giving way to Sharon Gless, who subsequently assumed the role permanently.
In Raleigh, North Carolina, during the months of October and November of 2003, she played the title role of Mame in a performance of Mame that was put on by North Carolina Theatre. At the Alhambra Dinner Theatre in Jacksonville, Florida, during the months of August and September of 2010, Swit appeared in the world premiere of the play Amorous Crossings by Mark Miller. Tod Booth was the director of the production.
In the year 2017, Swit was a part of the Buffalo, New York production of Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.
