About Jo Koy
Jo Koy is the professional name of Joseph Glenn Herbert. He’s an American stand-up comedian and screenwriter, best known for his multiple appearances on Comedy Central and Netflix comedy specials. In addition to his work as a comic, he has also worked as a panelist for various television shows such as Chelsea Lately, Hollywood Uncensored with Sam Rubin, and Lights Out with David Spade.
Jo Koy first gained fame after he landed his first of many appearances on the BET show Comic View. Joseph was born on June 2, 1971, in Tacoma, Washington. He’s of European and Filipino descent through his parents.
His father was born in the Washington area and worked in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in the Philippines where he met his mother. After the two got married, they moved to the Washington area where Joseph was born and raised. He divided his time between Spanaway and Tacoma, Washington. After he finished high school in Tacoma, he moved to Las Vegas to pursue a degree in economics.
Herbert is a former student of Spanaway Lake High School and Foss High School, with the latter being the institution that earned him his diploma. Upon his graduation in 1989, he enrolled in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. At first, he was interested in studying business and economics but almost instantly dropped out of the university to pursue a career in stand-up comedy.
What makes the stand-up comedian so prosperous is his association with the companies Comedy Central and Netflix. In 1989, right after he quit university, he developed the stage name Jo Koy and began attending comedy shows in Las Vegas to further improve his skills.
At first, he held impromptu performances in front of his family and friends but his mother convinced him to participate in school talent shows. One of his final shows in the Las Vegas area was at a coffee house, shortly after, he moved to Los Angeles for a career growth and development.
Starting in the 1990s, Jo Koy began appearing on the show Catch a Rising Star that aired from the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino as part of mic night before securing a regular spot on it. Towards the mid-years of the decade, the aspiring comedian impressed a talent coordinator from Los Angeles that landed him his very first television appearance on the BET hit show Comic View.
A few years later, in the early years of the new millennium he began working in other stand-up comedy specials with the most notable being Jamie Foxx Presents and Showtime at the Apollo. Ever since the 2000s, Jo Koy has been regularly working on more than 50 television and radio shows as both a comedian and panelist. He has performed in front of troops as part of the USO Tour and has starred in various VH1 shows – I Love the 70s, 80’s and 90’s.
For the past decade, he has worked as a panelist and appeared on over 100 episodes of the shows Chelsea Lately, Hollywood Uncensored, Big Morning Buzz, The World’s Funniest and Larry Wilmore’s The Nightly Show.
In July 2012, he became a podcaster and in collaboration with fellow television star Michael Yo started The Jo Koy and Michael Yo Show. For the past five years, his popularity was boosted even further when he produced and starred in many Netflix comedy specials such as Live from Seattle, Coming In Hot, and In His Elements.
Over the last decade Jo Koy has continued to perform in his comedic work. As of 2023, Koy has built a net worth estimated to be $2.5 million.
Appearing in films, realities, television series, talk shows, and stand-up comedy specials whilst also working as a screenwriter is what makes Jo Koy so successful. In 2008, he became a regular guest on the television series I Love the New Millennium and The World’s Dumbest.
He also began appearing sporadically on The International Sexy Ladies Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Most recently, Koy became an actor that has taken part in three films – Wake., Anastasia, and Mr. Iglesias.
