When Ian was in the sixth grade, his science class was where he first met Anthony. Both he and Anthony went to Del Campo High School, which is located in Fair Oaks, California. While there, he participated in cross country. After graduating from high school, they both went on to study at American River College in Sacramento, where Ian also competed in cross country.
In an interview that took place in 2012 with New Media Rockstars, Ian mentioned that the Pokémon Pidgey was the one he had managed to capture the most times while playing the game. During the same interview, he added that one of his favorite ways to indulge in a guilty pleasure is to run the car’s gas tank dry. He also claimed that he had been a runner in the past and had always wanted to participate in a marathon, but his parents never gave them permission for him to do so because he was too young. When Ian was a kid, he always had a bit of a pot belly. During the course of this conversation, Ian revealed that he suffers from a severe phobia of bees. When he was a child, he was playing on a swing in the backyard of his aunt’s house. He was unaware that there was a wasp’s nest there, but he was so sure of himself that he pushed it with the swing, causing all of the bees to rush out and attack him.
While his father has only been seen twice in Smosh films, his mother Sharon has appeared in a number of the channel’s videos (once in the behind the scenes video for Food Battle 2009, and then five years later in a Lunchtime with Smosh episode). Between the years 2007 and September 2014, Ian was romantically involved with Melanie Moat. Playmate Pamela Horton became his girlfriend on September 11, 2015, and he has been seeing her ever since.
