Who Are Smosh

Smosh is an American YouTube channel created by Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox showcasing sketch comedy.

Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla started a comedy duo called “Smosh” on YouTube in 2005 and it became a huge success. Today, as of 2021, the Smosh YouTube channel has over 25 million subscribers and the two creators combined net worth is estimated at $15 million dollars.

How did they get started?

A company called Alloy Digital bought Smosh in 2011, and in 2012, Ian and Anthony started three new YouTube channels ElSmosh, Shut Up! Cartoons, and Smosh Games. Their own mobile app was released in 2014.

Since 2012, the Smosh brand has expanded to consist of multiple channels, including a Spanish-language channel (ElSmosh), a channel focused on video gaming content (Smosh Games), and a variety channel (Smosh Pit). The sketches have also included more actors. Padilla left Smosh in June 2017 to pursue independent ventures. The Smosh channel has been the most subscribed YouTube channel during three distinct periods, with the first period spanning from May to June 2006, the second from April 2007 to September 2008, and the third span from January to August 2013.

On November 6, 2018, Smosh parent company Defy Media closed down abruptly. On November 12, 2018, the Smosh cast released a video announcing that production of Smosh, Smosh Pit, and Smosh Games content was still ongoing, and that existing videos would be finished and other content would be released independently by Smosh on their YouTube channels. They subsequently joined Mythical Entertainment after their company was purchased by Rhett and Link in 2019.  The channel’s cast now boasts social media celebrities Hecox, Courtney Miller, Damien Haas, Olivia Sui, Keith Leak Jr., Noah Grossman, and Shayne Topp who present most of the content.

Smosh has also released music albums: Sexy Album, If Music Were Real, Smoshtastic, and The Sweet Sound of Smosh.
