Howard Dean was elected as the Democratic Party’s chair in February 2005. He served in that capacity until President Obama replaced him with Virginia Governor Tim Kaine in January 2009. The DNC then referred to Dean as their “chairman emeritus”

When Charles, Dean’s younger brother and a global traveler, was kidnapped and executed by Laotian rebels in 1974, it changed Dean’s life forever. Throughout his 2004 presidential campaign, Dean wore his brother’s belt every day.

From 1981 through 1991, licensed physician Howard Dean worked alongside his wife, Dr. Judy Steinberg, in a family practice. An effort to create a neighborhood bike path in 1981 marked the beginning of Dean’s political career.
Dean was chosen for two part-time positions: the Vermont legislature in 1982 and lieutenant governor in 1986. While attending to a patient in 1991, Dean learned about the Governor’s passing. Dean served as governor from 1991 to 2002, winning two elections for terms of five years each.
