Gordon was born on February 6th, 1964, in Amherstview, Canada. He studied at the Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute. In 1983, Gordon formed a band consisting of him as a lead singer, and other musicians, guitarist Rob Baker, saxophonist Davis Manning, drummer Johnny Fay, and bassist Gord Sinclair. After Manning left, the band joined guitarist Paul Langlois.
The band has been really successful, releasing fourteen studio albums and many singles. Downie has also pursued his solo career. His debut solo album titled Coke Machine Glow was released in 2001. He has released five solo albums together with his latest album titled Secret Path from October 2016.
Downie resides in Toronto together with his loving wife, Laura Leigh Usher. The couple has four children together.
