One of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Frida Kahlo, overcame personal sorrow by using it as inspiration for significant works of art. Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is most renowned for her self-portraits. She was actually born on July 6, 1907, but she liked to claim that her birthday was July 7, 1910. Guillermo Kahlo and Matilde Calderón y Gonzales were her parents. She lied about her birthdate because she wanted to be linked to the 1910 Mexican Revolution.
Frida Kahlo’s Medical Issues
Kahlo had ongoing medical issues. She had polio at age 6, which injured one of her legs and caused it to be significantly thinner than the other. In addition, she was involved in a terrible car accident as a teenager that rendered her bedridden for several months. In the collision, she fractured her pelvis, collarbone, ribs, spinal column, and uterus with a handrail piercing her abdomen. She started painting after the accident, when she was getting well. Regarding her self portraits, she is reported to have said, “I paint myself because I am often alone and because I am the subject I know best”

Many people have referred to her obsession with self portraits as a form of therapy for her anguish and suffering. Without a doubt, Frida’s body served as the focal point of all of her thoughts, including those related to her exterior experiences and environment as well as her internal self as a woman and artist.
Kahlo’s art did not receive widespread praise until many years after her passing. She did not become well known to the general public until the early 1980s. Given that they both had quick tempers, Kahlo and the well-known Mexican artist Diego Rivera had a turbulent marriage. Both had multiple extramarital relationships, with Kahlo having affairs with both men and women. After divorcing in 1939, the pair got back together in 1940. Their second marriage experienced the same issues as their first.
Her father built La Casa Azul, or the Blue House, in 1907 and it became the family home where Frida grew up and to which she went in her dying years. It became a significant part of her psyche. After Diego Rivera passed away three years later, the house was given and turned into a museum. Kahlo passed away in 1954 from illness.
