About Fran Tarkenton
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, famous NFL quarterback Fran Tarkenton vexed defensive backs and pass rushers alike by extending plays with his exceptional movement both inside and outside the pocket. Tarkenton frequently appeared to be surrounded by defenders, only to turn, juke, or sprint to safety before connecting with a receiver in the distance. Almost every significant throwing record in the NFL was under his control by the time he put his shoulder pads away for the final time.
Tarkenton was taken by the Boston Patriots in the fifth round of the AFL Draft in 1961, but he decided to join with the Minnesota Vikings instead when they took him in the third round of the NFL Draft. He soon made an impression on the field as well as in the hearts of Minnesota fans with four touchdown passes and one running score in his debut game as a starter.
Tarkenton scampered and passed his way to victory with the Vikings over the course of the following six seasons. He did not, however, play in a way that Norm Van Brocklin, the head coach, who firmly believed in the more conventional pocket passer, wished to accomplish. As a result, Tarkenton was transferred to the 1967 doormat New York Giants in exchange for a number of high draft picks. Tarkenton guided the Giants back to respectability over the course of the following five seasons, but he never had a real chance to win the NFL championship.
In 1972, Tarkenton was traded back to the Vikings, where he spent the final seven years of his playing career and helped the team win six NFC Central Division titles and make three Super Bowl appearances. He was also named 1975’s NFL MVP. Despite not winning the coveted NFL championship, he retired as one of the best signal callers in the history of the sport.
Tarkenton completed 3,686 of 6,467 passes over the course of his 18-year NFL career for 47,003 yards, 342 touchdowns, and 266 interceptions. He added 3,674 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns on 675 carries for the ground game. With 124 regular season triumphs, he ranks among the all-time leaders in wins by a starting quarterback.
Tarkenton worked as an announcer for Monday Night Football from 1979 through 1982 after his Hall of Fame career. In addition, he received inductions into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986, the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Athens (GA) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. He was also a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.
