About Fannie Flagg
While attending the Santa Barbara Writer’s Conference in 1978, Flagg took home the first prize for her short work. After the passing of her parents, she used the work as inspiration for her novel Coming Attractions, which was released in 1981. The diary-style narrative begins in 1952 with the protagonist, 11-year-old Daisy Fay Harper, and follows her as she navigates the world and her own identity as she comes of age. Daisy tells the narrative of her drunken father’s attempts to get rich quick and her polite mother through notes in a diary.
Flagg started her comedy writing career in the 1960s at the Upstairs at the Downstairs club in New York City. Flagg stepped in for a sick performer and ended up catching the notice of Candid Camera’s founder, Allen Funt, who was also in attendance. Soon after, Flagg joined the show’s writing staff and eventually even appeared on it.
As a result of her father’s encouragement, Flagg began writing and acting at a young age. At age 10, she wrote her first stage play. She entered the Miss Alabama pageant when she was in high school and ended up winning a year’s worth of tuition at a local theater program because of it. Following that, Flagg co-hosted a “Morning Show” on WBRC-TV in Birmingham, but she left after being denied a raise and instead settled in New York City.
Flagg was a regular panelist for game shows throughout the 1970s. A lot of people recognize her from her time on Match Game (normally occupying the lower right-hand seat next to regular panelist Richard Dawson). She replaced Carlin Glynn in the title role of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on Broadway, and has since appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Some of My Best Friends Are…, Five Easy Pieces, Stay Hungry, Grease, and Crazy in Alabama, among others.
After meeting at a party hosted by Marlo Thomas in the Hollywood Hills in the mid-1970s, Flagg and American writer Rita Mae Brown ended up living together in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Brown claims that Flagg shared a home with Susan Flannery, a former star of The Bold and the Beautiful, for eight years. Her novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which was released in 1987 and spent a total of 36 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, is widely regarded as her magnum opus.
In fact, both Harper Lee and Eudora Welty gave it high marks. The story concentrates on the community of Whistle Stop, Alabama, in the 1920s and 1930s, and is presented from the perspectives of Ninny Threadgoode (the past) and Evelyn Couch (the present).
