In Austin, Texas, where he attended Westlake High School, Andrew Brees was born in 1979. He guided his high school team to an undefeated season and the state title in 1996. Drew Brees’ early NFL career
Bress was selected by the San Diego Chargers at the end of the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft, falling short of predictions that he would be selected in the first round. In 2002 and 2004, Brees started every game, but after suffering a shoulder injury and contract issues in 2005, he left the Chargers.
Brees and the New Orleans Saints agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract in 2006. He led the league with more than 4,400 passing yards in his rookie season. Even though the Saints advanced to the NFC Championship, they fell to the Chicago Bears.
Brees continued to throw for more than 4,400 yards in 2007 and established an NFL record with 440 completions, but the Saints were unable to go further in the season.
Brees leads the Saints to the Super Bowl.
But in 2009, that would alter. Brees set an NFL record for completion % during the regular season. In Super Bowl XLIV (44) against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, the Saints defeated them 31-17, and Brees was voted the game’s MVP. He would win the Sports Illustrated and Associated Press awards for top male athlete.
Dan Marino’s record for passing yards in a season was broken by Brees in 2011 after he threw for 5,476 yards, but the Saints fell in the divisional round.
The Saints signed Brees to the richest guaranteed contract in NFL history before the 2012 campaign, at $100 million over five years.
