About Dario Franchitti
George Dario Marino Franchitti MBE is a retired British racing driver who began his career in the North American open-wheel series before serving as a test driver for Jaguar during the 2000 Formula One season. He was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland. From 2010 to 2013, his relative Paul di Resta competed with Force India.
At the 2013 Grand Prix of Houston, Franchitti was involved in an IndyCar collision in which, after making contact with Takuma Sato’s vehicle, Franchitti was sent quickly into the catch netting. The Scottish driver’s racing career was virtually over after breaking two vertebrae in his spine and his ankle. Less than six weeks after making a full recovery, Franchitti announced his retirement based on doctor’s advise. After announcing his retirement, Franchitti was hired to commentate on the first Formula E season.
In 2007, after a lap 163 crash involving Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti, Franchitti took the victory in a rain-shortened Indianapolis 500. He received a $1.6 million reward.
