Bash had her high school education at Pascack Hills, which is located in Montvale, New Jersey. She received a bachelor of arts degree in political communications from George Washington University, where she also received high honors in her studies. During her time at the university, she held internships at NBC, CBS, and CNN. Bash was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire, on May 12, 2018.
After graduating from college, Bash began her career in the media industry by becoming a producer for CNN’s weekend programs, including Late Edition, Evans & Novak, and Inside Politics. Later she occasionally began appearing on-air in the absence of regular host John King. Later, she started producing programming that specialized in coverage of the United States Senate, where she would eventually become CNN’s Chief Congressional Correspondent. Later still, she began working as a reporter for CNN. In 2021, Bash became a co-host on the Sunday morning show State of the Union that was broadcast on CNN alongside Jake Tapper.
Dana Ruth Schwartz was born into a Jewish family in the borough of Manhattan in the city of New York. Her mother, Frances (née Weinman) Schwartz, was an author and educator in Jewish studies, and her father, Stuart Schwartz, was a producer for ABC News who served as the senior broadcast producer for Good Morning America. She spent her childhood in both Washington, District of Columbia, and New Jersey.
Between the years 1998 and 2007, Bash was married to Jeremy Bash, who would later serve as the Chief of Staff of the CIA and the Chief of Staff of the Department of Defense under President Barack Obama. She tied the knot with colleague CNN contributor John King in the year 2008. In 2011, Bash became a mother to a son, and the following year, she and King got a divorce.
At Elle magazine’s 2014 “Women in Washington Power List” event, Bash was recognized as one of the influential women in the city. In 2011, in response to mounting pressure about Jewish Women International’s backing of abortion rights, she resigned from her position as a trustee for the organization. After Bash accepted the trustee position, there was a rise in the amount of posts on conservative sites that discussed the organization’s stance on abortion.
Bash moderated the Democratic primary debate for the presidential election in 2019, during which Kamala Harris made headlines by telling Joe Biden that “that little girl was me” Bash also moderated the debate.
