Carman was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and was an Italian American. He played in his mother’s band when he was younger. Carman began playing the drums at age 5, picked up the guitar at age 15, and began singing at age 16. He had modest success as an adolescent performer at Atlantic City, New Jersey, casinos.
Carman was an evangelist, musician, songwriter, and television broadcaster who specialized in modern Christian music. He sold over 10 million records and received four Grammy nominations.
On the Billboard 200 list, Carman’s album Mission 3:16 (1998) peaked at position 94. No Plan B, his 2014 album, peaked at number 3 on the Top Christian Albums charts and at number 66 on the Billboard 200.
Carman became a born-again Christian and embraced evangelicalism while visiting an Andraé Crouch concert.
Carman frequently hosted programs on the Trinity Broadcasting Network in addition to music, most notably its flagship program Praise the Lord.
Carman disclosed that his illness had returned in January 2020.
In June 2020, he started performing live in churches again.
Carman passed away in a hospital in Las Vegas on February 16, 2021, 28 days after his 65th birthday, as a consequence of complications from surgery to treat a hiatal hernia. His ex-wife, six stepchildren, and nine stepgrandchildren all survived him.
