About Roger Waters
Waters’s father drove an ambulance during the Blitz as a conscientious objector in the early years of the Second World War. He eventually adopted a pacifist viewpoint, enlisted in the Territorial Army, and on September 11, 1943, was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
Roger was just five months old when he was killed on February 18, 1944, near Aprilia, in the Battle of Anzio. In Aprilia and the Cassino War Cemetery, he is honored. On February 18, 2014, Waters erected a memorial in Aprilia, Italy, honoring his father and other war dead. He was also designated an honorary citizen of Anzio. Mary Waters, a teacher herself, relocated to Cambridge with her two kids and reared them there after her husband’s passing. The V-J Day festivities are one of Waters’ first memories.
Pink Floyd’s concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979), and The Final Cut (1980) were commercial successes around the world (1983). They were one of the most critically acclaimed and financially successful bands in popular music by the early 1980s. In 1985, Waters quit the band due to artistic disagreements and a legal battle over the use of the band’s name and material followed. 1987 saw an out-of-court settlement.
With 450,000 attendees, Waters’ 1990 The Wall – Live in Berlin concert was one of the biggest rock events in history. He was admitted to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of Pink Floyd. Later that year, for the Live 8 worldwide awareness event—the band’s first performance with Waters since 1981—he reconnected with Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. He has performed The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety during his world tour from 2006 to 2008, and the Wall Live tour from 2010 to 2013 was the highest-grossing solo artist tour at the time. He has performed as a solo act extensively since 1999.
