About Bob Baffert
Bob Baffert, whose full name is Robert Baffert, is an American racehorse owner and trainer. His horses have won multiple races including seven Preakness Stakes, six Kentucky Derbies, three Kentucky Oats, and three Belmont Stakes. Baffert is known for training many Triple Crown winners such as American Pharaoh from 2015 and Justify from 2018. Most recently, at the 2020 race, he tied the record with Authentic for most wins at the Kentucky Derby.
The businessman became famous after his father purchased quarter horses during his pre-teen years and taught him the basics of the racehorse business. He was born on January 13, 1953. Born and raised in Nogales, Arizona, Robert grew up on a ranch where his family took care of animals such as chickens and cattle. When he was ten years old, Robert’s father bought several (quarter) horses, which he practiced for racing on a dirt track.
During his teens, he occasionally worked as a jockey before eventually deciding to learn more about the horse racing. After learning some techniques, in 1970, at the age of 17, Baffert scored his first victory. Also in the late 1970s, he graduated from the Arizona (University of Arizona) as part of its Race Track Industry Program. After he got a Bachelor of Science and got married, towards the new decade, Baffert began training quarter horses himself.
At the age of 20, he had already developed his own reputation as a trainer and was hired by many other trainers to help them with their stables. In the early 1980s, he moved to California where he began working for the Los Alamitos Race Course, thanks to which he earned an estimated $10-25,000 annually.
His first big break was in 1992 when his training horse Thirty Slews won the Breeder’s Cup race.
After that win, he gained the reputation of the wealthiest trainer in the country. Towards the end of the decade, he focused his attention on the American classic races. His first trainee was a three-year-old Cavonnier, which was placed second in the Kentucky Derby. That performance alone earned the trainer a place in many other trainers and jockeys minds, as well as a fat pay check. The money in horse racing can be substantial and Baffert was positioned perfectly for success.
He then spent a couple more years working with horses such as Congaree, and War Emblem. In fact, the latter earned Bob his first of many Triple Crown wins. In the early years of the 21st century, starting in 2001, he was able to gain wins with Point Given. He continued to train many other horses such as Pioneer of The Nile, Mike Pegram, Looking At Lucky, Bodemeister, and Paynter.
2014 was the year that started off the momentum of Baffert when his two-year-old American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown. The following years, his trainer Belmont Stakes, Justify, and Authentic went on to bring him four additional Triple Crowns.
In addition to the many successful horses that he has trained, the Triple Crowns, and the records he achieved, Bob also won multiple awards and races. His first major award win was in 1997 with the Eclipse Award, which he would go on to win for three consecutive years. He also won fifteen American Classic races, fifteen Breeders Cup races, nine Santa Anita Derby races, and many others.
Ever since the late 2000s, he has sporadically made guest appearances as himself in numerous televisions programs and documentaries such as “Rome Is Burning”, “Take Home Chef”, “Today, and “Fox and Friends”.
