About Bo Hopkins
He was adopted when he was nine months old by a couple who were unable to have children of their own due to infertility. As he was growing up, everyone dubbed him “Billy.” His biological father worked in a mill in Taylors, South Carolina, while his adoptive father worked there. His father passed away from a heart attack on the front porch of the house the family lived in when he was 39 years old. Both Billy and his mother were present when he passed away.
Because they were unable to continue living in their home, the two of them relocated to a new domicile in the adjacent town of Ware Shoals one month later. It was during that time that he discovered he had been adopted because his adoptive mother was unable to have children of her own. When he was twelve years old, he met his birth mother. She and his half-sisters and half-brother lived in Lockhart, South Carolina, which is another little mill town in the state.
Hopkins’s wife disapproved of his desire to pursue a career in acting, so she quickly divorced him and took their daughter with her. Hopkins later expressed interest in pursuing a career in acting. After performing in a few plays in the area, he was awarded a scholarship to study acting and stage production at the Pioneer Playhouse in Kentucky, where he quickly relocated to attend the school.
After performing in some theater plays in Kentucky, he made his way to New York City to participate in other theatre productions. Following his time in New York, he came to Hollywood with the boyfriend of his cousin’s buddy, who had aspirations of becoming a stuntman. While he was attending classes at the Actors Studio in Hollywood, where one of his students was the future recipient of an Academy Award, he supported himself by working as a valet parking attendant.
After Hopkins had established himself as a leading actor in big motion pictures in the early 1970s, he made his debut in the film White Lightning (1973). Roy Boone was portrayed by Hopkins. In the 1985 film “What Comes Around,” Jerry Reed and Hopkins played the roles of Joe and Tom Hawkins, respectively, who are brothers.
In 1978, when Gretchen Corbett decided to leave her role as Rockford’s attorney John Cooper on the television series The Rockford Files, Hopkins stepped in to take up the role. Hopkins ultimately appeared in three episodes of the show. Hopkins made his debut as the character Matthew Blaisdel in the premiere season of the prime-time drama Dynasty in the year 1981. The miniseries Aspen (1977) and Beggarman and Thief were just two of his numerous other appearances on television.
