About Bill Nye
After receiving his degree from Cornell, Nye began his career as an engineer in the Seattle area, working for both the Boeing Corporation and Sundstrand Data Control. While working at Boeing, he came up with a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube that is currently used on Boeing 747 aircraft. He attempted to join NASA’s astronaut training program on four separate occasions, but to no avail.
Edwin Darby “Ned” Nye (1917–1997), who also served in World War II and worked as a contractor building an airstrip on Wake Island, was Nye’s father. Jacqueline Jenkins (1921–2000), who worked as a codebreaker during the war, and Edwin Darby “Ned” Nye (1917–1997) were Nye’s parents. Nye was born on November 27, 1955 in Washington, D.C. Following his victory in a look-alike competition for Steve Martin in 1978, Nye began performing stand-up comedy.
When Nye’s friends encouraged him to perform Steve Martin impressions at parties, he quickly realized how much he enjoyed making other people laugh and began to seek out opportunities to do so. While he was still employed full-time at Boeing, he started performing stand-up comedy on the side. On October 3, 1986, Nye handed in his notice at Boeing so that he could concentrate on his developing comic career. In 1987, when Bill Nye was attending his 10-year college reunion, he made a point of going out of his way to visit Carl Sagan at Cornell.
In the year 1986, Nye participated as both a writer and an actor on Almost Live!, a local sketch comedy television show that was produced in Seattle. It was during an open mic night where he first met the show is host, John Keister, who gave him his big break on the show. Following the cancellation of a guest, cohost Ross Shafer informed Nye that he needed to fill seven minutes of programming. The audience was kept engaged by Nye’s comedic demonstrations, such as when he showed them what would happen if they ate a marshmallow that had been dipped in liquid nitrogen.
Even though Nye was a regular on Almost Live!, the work that he did for the program was all done on a freelance basis. While he was looking for more TV contracts, he was offered the chance to present Fabulous Wetlands in 1989. The show was a brief instructional program about the wetlands in Washington state and was sponsored by the Washington State Department of Ecology. During the episode Fabulous Wetlands, Bill Nye discussed the significance of protecting estuaries as well as the risks associated with pollution.
After his time on Almost Live!, Bill Nye went on to work as Dr. Emmett Brown’s assistant in the live-action instructional sequences of Back to the Future: The Animated Series from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, with the help of James McKenna, Erren Gottlieb, and Elizabeth Brock, Bill Nye prepared a pilot for a new show to be shown on the public television station in Seattle known as KCTS-TV. The show was titled Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
They advertised it as “Mr. Wizard meets Pee-Playhouse” wee’s which is a combination of the two shows. The National Science Foundation as well as the Department of Energy in the United States provided Nye with financial support for the show. The program was included in a package of syndicated series that was made available to local stations so that they could schedule them in accordance with the provisions of the Children’s Television Act.
Nye’s Science Guy persona is also prevalent at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, most notably in his appearance alongside Ellen DeGeneres at the attraction known as Ellen’s Energy Adventure, which was open to guests from 1996 until 2017 and was located in the Universe of Energy pavilion at Walt Disney World’s Epcot. In addition, the voice of Nye’s Science Guy character may be heard in a voice-over in the DINOSAUR attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In addition, in 1999, Nye’s Science Guy character served as the on-air spokesman for the Noggin television network.
Netflix made the announcement that Nye would be a part of a new series on August 31, 2016, titled Bill Nye Saves the World. The series’ first episode aired on April 21, 2017. On May 11, 2018, the show is third and final season was made available to streaming users.
In the season 8 episode of Blindspot titled “Let It Go” which aired in 2018, Nye appeared as a guest star, playing a fictionalized version of himself who is the father of the character Patterson. In addition, the fictitious version of Nye makes a reference to his competition with Rodney McKay, which was introduced in the episode of Stargate Atlantis titled “Brain Storm” as previously indicated.
