About Andrew W.K.
Professionally known as Andrew W.K., Andrew Fetterly Wilkes-Krier is an American conceptual performance artist, rock vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. Wilkes-Krier, a Michigan native, started playing music in the middle of the 1990s. Before eventually relocating to New York, where he released his debut records under the name Andrew W.K., he played in a variety of local bands.
A professor at the University of Michigan Law School and co-author of the well regarded Dukeminier & Krier Property casebook, his father is Professor James E. Krier.
Wendy Wilkes is his mother. Patrick, his younger brother, was a golf professional and is currently a golf coach in Michigan. Wilkes-Krier started taking piano lessons at the University of Michigan School of Music when he was 4 years old.
Early family outings to Midnight Mass, according to him, had a significant influence on his love of music. To distinguish him from his classmates Andrew Cohen and Andrew Gilchrist, he was given the nickname Andrew W.K. by an elementary school teacher. After finishing middle school at the exclusive Greenhills School for college prep, he attended the alternative Community High School from 1993 to 1997, where he continued his piano and keyboard studies.
After attracting some interest with the 2000 EP Girls Own Juice, Wilkes-Krier gained notoriety with the November 2001 publication of his debut studio album I Get Wet. In the years after its debut, Wilkes-Krier has engaged in a variety of other musical and non-musical endeavors, such as work on television and radio, motivational speaking engagements, and writing.
At the age of 14, he joined the group Slam, subsequently known as Reverse Polarity, in 1993.
In 1996, W.K.’s song “Mr. Surprise,” his first track to be made available to the public, was included on the compilation Plant the Flower Seeds by the Ypsilanti, Michigan-based record label Westside Audio Laboratories.

Andrew W.K. announced his album-making plans in October 2020 after joining Napalm Records.
On February 17, 2021, the lead single, “Babalon,” was made available.
“Babalon” was made available for restricted pre-order on the Napalm Records and Andrew W.K. stores as a 7″ vinyl with the instrumental B-Side “The Party Gods,” according to a Napalm Records press release.
The 393-copy release, which deviates from Andrew W.K.’s customarily upbeat and inspirational themes, includes “swinging drumming and a demonic guitar riff opening [the track’s] hellish gates.”
The release date for Andrew W.K.’s sixth studio album, God Is Partying, was confirmed on May 6, 2021.
The nine-track CD, which Ted Young and W.K. have co-produced throughout the years, features W.K. playing every instrument. A new track, “I’m in Heaven,” was also released in conjunction with the announcement. The video for “Everybody Sins,” which includes Kat Dennings, was released on July 14, 2021. Along with the single “Stay True To Your Heart,” the album God Is Partying was released in September 2021.
Following the album’s release, W.K. abruptly cancelled forthcoming performances, removed his website and social media accounts, and kept quiet about what had happened. His label likewise remained silent.
