Gill continued to release highly successful albums throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, capitalizing on the virtuoso quality of his electric and acoustic guitar playing, his pure, high, and soulful tenor voice, and the excellent quality of his songwriting. Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, Gill continued to release albums. Gill has won more CMA Awards than any other singer in history, and as of 2018, he has also won 21 Grammy Awards, which is the most ever won by a country musician. The Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City was Gill’s alma mater for his high school education. During his time there, he was a member of the golf team and performed bluegrass with the band Mountain Smoke, which developed a significant fan base in the area. In 1975, upon his graduation from high school, he relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, in order to become a member of the band Bluegrass Alliance. After that, he was a member of Ricky Skaggs’ Boone Creek band for a short period of time before going to Los Angeles to become a member of Sundance, a bluegrass band led by fiddler Byron Berline.
In 1968, Gill’s older half-brother, Bob Coen, was a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a serious collision. Gill was only 11 years old when this event took place, whereas Bob was already 22 years old. After the accident, Bob was in a coma for three months and suffered permanent brain damage as a result. After that, he had a hard time making it through life and eventually lost touch with his family and friends. He died in 1993.
Gill dedicated the song “It Won’t Be the Same This Year” to his sibling by writing the lyrics and music. Both his Christmas record from 1993, titled Let There Be Peace on Earth, and his first ever television Christmas special from that same year were both devoted to Coen.
In 1979, Gill made his debut on the national market with the country rock band Pure Prairie League. He appeared on the album Can not Hold Back, which was released by that band. The song “Let Me Love You Tonight” by that band has him as the lead singer. In the past, he was extended an invitation by Mark Knopfler to become a member of Dire Straits; however, he turned down the offer (although he did sing backup vocals on the album “On Every Street” by Dire Straits).
When they were both just beginning their careers in music, country music artist Janis Oliver of Sweethearts of the Rodeo introduced herself to Gill in Los Angeles. In 1980, the couple tied the knot. Jenny, their daughter, was born in the year 1982. The couple uprooted their lives and relocated to Nashville in 1983. During the time that his wife was building her career, Gill supported the family by working as a session guitarist, singing backup vocals, and writing songs. Gill would occasionally work as a sound engineer for his wife’s band. In 1997, the couple finalized their divorce.
Since the 10th of August in the year 1991, Gill has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry. On August 13, 2016, he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a member of the Opry with a special tribute program. 1997 was the year that he was honored with the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement. In the year 2010, Gill became a member of the country swing band The Time Jumpers in a formal capacity.
It was the opening night of the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky, when he gave a performance there in March of 2012. When vocalist LeAnn Rimes pulled out of the event one day before it was scheduled to begin, it was at the last minute that he was asked to participate. That night, Gill drove over from Nashville with only his guitar and played to multiple standing ovations from a crowd that was packed to capacity with only standing room available.
In 2014, Gill was presented with the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence from the Country Music Association. Gill was only the sixth person to win the award since it was first given out in the year 1983. In 2016, Gill was chosen to be one of the 30 musicians to appear on the project titled “Forever Country,” which honors the CMA Awards for its 50th anniversary. Throughout the course of his career, Gill has amassed more than 50 Top 40 songs and has had more than 26 million album sales.
