About Twenty One Pilots
In 2015, the duo released their fourth studio album, titled Blurryface, which spawned the popular singles “Stressed Out” and “Ride”. The album also received widespread critical acclaim. In addition, the band became the first alternative artist in the United States to have two singles simultaneously ranked in the top ten of the country’s singles charts when they recorded the song “Heathens” for the soundtrack of the movie Suicide Squad.
At a party during his time at Ohio State University, future bandmate Chris Salih, who was born in Texas, was introduced to Tyler Joseph. Salih approached Joseph about the possibility of forming a band after recognizing the talent and inventive spirit of the songwriter. Joseph, who was impressed by the recording studio that Salih had constructed in his home, consented to play music with Salih and began discussing his ideas for new musical compositions.
When they were both young, Joseph and Nick Thomas, who would later become bandmates, first met on the basketball court in Columbus, Ohio. Later on, Thomas moved to Joseph’s middle school, and the two of them continued to be friends throughout their time together in high school.
When they first started out, the band would play for a wide array of people at different clubs and venues all across the Columbus area. Joseph was inspired to mix music of contrasting genres into his songs after performing at places that had metal, hardcore, and electronic music. The band began to experiment with different costumes and on-stage gymnastics in order to attract the attention of attendees who were either unfamiliar with them or disinterested in them.
In 2010, the band uploaded two songs to their SoundCloud account: one was a rendition of Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts” and the other was an original song titled “Time to Say Goodbye” which sampled “Con te partirò” which was originally performed by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman.
The latter track would end up being the first song from the band that local drummer Josh Dun would hear. During their performance at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion in April 2012, the band made the announcement that they had signed a recording contract with the division of Atlantic Records called Fueled by Ramen.
They made their first recording for Fueled by Ramen on July 17, 2012, and it was a three-song EP that was published under that name. The band set out on a quick tour with Neon Trees and Walk the Moon the following month, which lasted for one month.
Twenty One Pilots gave an appearance at the MTVU Woodie Awards on March 17, 2014, which took place in conjunction with SXSW. Twenty One Pilots gave a performance of their song “Car Radio” during the 2014 MTV Movie Awards on April 13. On April 28th, the band appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and played their song “Car Radio”.
On May 11, 2015, the band started the Blurryface Tour in Glasgow, which is located in Scotland. The tour included stops in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States of America. On September 8, 2015, the U.S. leg of the tour got underway, and Echosmith and Finish Ticket were the opening acts. On September 14, 2015, Twenty One Pilots appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where they played their song “Stressed Out”.
The band unveiled three new works on July 11, 2018, including “Jumpsuit,” “Nico and the Niners,” and the music video for “Jumpsuit.” “Jumpsuit” was the first of the three. After some time had passed, on July 26, 2018, the music video for “Nico and the Niners” was finally made available to the public. The song “Levitate” was eventually made available to the public as the third single from the album. It was debuted on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show as the “World Record” for that particular day. The music video was also made available, bringing the trilogy of releases to a close.
In September of 2021, the tour got underway in Denver, which is located in Colorado. On July 23, 2021, it was announced that the musicians Half Alive, Arrested Youth, and Jay Joseph would be serving as openers for the portion of the tour that would take place in the United States.
The Icy Tour, which was a rebranded second leg of the Takeover Tour with a focus on arena events, started in August 2022 and continued through September of that same year. These tours featured a dedicated band of live musicians for the very first time since the band had become a duet almost a decade earlier; yet, their shows continued to make some use of backing tracks.
In the live performance video, which was uploaded on July 22, 2022, the duo performed a mashup of the show is theme tune and their 2016 single “Heathens” The video was produced in partnership with the Netflix series Stranger Things.

2009 was the year that saw the birth of the band, which currently features only Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.
