Pepa or Pep is the stage name of Sandra Jacqueline Denton, a Jamaican-American rapper and actress best known for being a part of the Grammy Award-winning female rap group Salt-N-Pepa. The Salt-N-Pepa Show, a reality TV program about the group’s reformation, starring Denton and aired on the VH1 network in 2008. Denton has been a supporting cast member on WE tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop since January 2016 as part of the music reality series.
American hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa is based in Queens, New York. One of the first all-female rap groups, the group was founded in 1985 and consisted of Cheryl James (“Salt”), Sandra Denton (“Pepa”), and Latoya Hanson, who was later replaced by Deidra Roper (“DJ Spinderella”) in 1986. They were the 1995 Grammy Award-winning duo or group for Best Rap Performance.
Midway through the 1980s, Denton dated and got engaged to rapper Prince Markie Dee. Tyran Jr. Denton, a son she had with New York rapper Tyran “Tah-Tah” Moore, was Denton’s first child and was born on July 6, 1990. In 1994, she appeared as a guest on Ricki Lake and instructed teenage girls on the duties of motherhood. In the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, Denton was the proprietor of HollyHood, a retail clothing boutique that debuted in November 1995.
After dating intermittently for seven years, Denton wed Treach (real name Anthony Criss) of the rap duo Naughty by Nature on April 2, 1999 at a tattoo parlor in Kansas City. On July 24, 1999, they got married at their Morristown, New Jersey, home. Egypt Jahnari Criss, a daughter of Denton and Treach (born September 2, 1998). Treach made accusations of physical abuse, leading to their divorce in 2001.
