O’Connor attended Stanford University for her undergraduate studies in law, where she met William Rehnquist, a future judge of the Supreme Court.
Sandra Day O’Connor’s early career
She received a Magna Cum Laude diploma, yet she still had trouble launching a successful legal profession. No law firms were interested in hiring her as a lawyer due to her gender. In fact, she received a job offer as a secretary from at least one law company. She eventually worked as a civil attorney for the army starting in the middle of the 1950s. Sandra Day O’Connor established her own legal firm and created a family with her husband John after moving back to Arizona in 1957. She was appointed the State’s Assistant Attorney General by 1965, serving in that capacity until 1969. She was elected to the Arizona State Senate that year and later became the first woman to serve as majority leader of a state senate.
First female justice on the Supreme Court
She presided over a number of courts from 1974 to 1981 before being nominated by President Ronald Reagan to take a vacancy on the Supreme Court. On September 25, 1981, she became the first woman to hold a position on the US Supreme Court after being unanimously confirmed. She would participate in several significant rulings protecting women’s rights and act as a pivotal swing vote on the court. In 2006, she formally retired.
