On December 1, 1955, Rosa was detained after she refused to give up her seat to a white male passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was 42 years old at the time and was simply returning home from the retail store. The first 10 rows of those city buses were set aside for white passengers. Rosa was in the 11th row, but the bus driver made her relocate when it got busy. He dialed the cops after she refused. Rosa was detained and spent some time in jail.
Her account started a movement. Black people and their supporters banded together to support a 381-day bus boycott of the city. Young Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. rose to prominence in the cause and was named the boycott’s spokesperson. To the tens of thousands of attendees, he taught nonviolence.

Rosa was found guilty in accordance with city law, but her attorney appealed. Shortly after, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling by a district court in the area declaring segregated public buses to be unconstitutional in a different case.
Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks
Rosa earned several honors for the rest of her life and came to be known as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement. She joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church and was ordained as a deaconess after relocating to Michigan. She co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development and worked for a congressman. Rosa received hundreds of honors, including more than 40 honorary doctorates. She was selected by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 most influential individuals of the 20th century, among other accolades. She received the Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton, the nation’s highest honor for a civilian. Only the Congressional Medal of Honor, which Rosa also won, can be compared to it.
Rosa published four books, appeared on television, and did a lot more. On October 24, 2005, just a few days before the 50th anniversary of her arrest, she passed away of natural causes at the age of 92. Numerous people in Washington, D.C., attended her funeral and memorial services. Rosa and her husband never had children, but her outstanding work and legacy live on.
