Kelly Robert Thomas was born on February 14, 1972 and is a German-born American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist with an estimated net worth of $18 million. Rob Thomas was born on a U.S. army base in Landstuhl, Germany. His parents divorced, and he spent much of his childhood shuttling between his grandmother in South Carolina and his mother in Florida. Thomas dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to pursue a career in music. In 1993 he formed the band Tabitha’s Secret. Matchbox Twenty released their first album Yourself Or Someone Like You in the fall of 1996. Constant touring helped tracks like “Push” eventually catch on with modern rock radio, and the album began climbing the Billboard charts. By 1998 Yourself Or Someone Like You had sold over 5 million copies and Rolling Stone readers voted the band the Best New Band of 1997.
While Matchbox Twenty took 1999 off to record their second album, Rob Thomas took on a songwriting and singing assignment with the Latin rock band Santana. The song “Smooth” was one of many tracks on the Supernatural album with guest performers, but it was the track chosen as the lead single.
