He is an American actor, singer, composer, and performer. His tunes include the Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Rainy Days and Mondays,” Three Dog Night’s “An Old Fashioned Love Song” and “Out in the Country,” Helen Reddy’s “You and Me Against the World,” Biff Rose’s “Fill Your Heart,” and “You and Me Against the World” by Three Dog Night.
Williams was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of architectural engineer Paul Hamilton Williams and his housewife wife Bertha Mae (née Burnside).
John S. Williams, a NASA rocket scientist and one of his brothers, took part in the Mercury and Apollo missions and received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the organization’s highest accolade, in 1969.
Other notable works by Williams include the Oscar-nominated song “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie, the #1 chart-topping song “Evergreen,” the love theme from the Barbra Streisand film A Star Is Born, for which he won a Grammy for Song of the Year and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Williams is also known for writing the score and lyrics for the 1976 film Bugsy Malone. He developed the music and lyrics for the opening theme of the television program The Love Boat, which was originally performed by Jack Jones and later by Dionne Warwick.
Williams played a number of well-known characters, including Little Enos Burdette in the action-comedy Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and the malevolent Swan in Brian De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise (1974), for which he also co-composed the score and earned an Oscar nomination.
Williams has served as chairman and president of the American Society for Composers of Popular Music (ASCAP) since 2009.
Williams battled alcoholism and drug addiction in the 1970s and 1980s.
