About Nova Rockafeller
Insufficient Funds, Rockafeller’s debut album, was released in 2011. The record chronicles the first six months of Rockafeller’s life. During the time that The Pirate Bay was known as ‘The Promo Bay,’ Rockafeller had her song titled “call me (BAT MAN) 347-574-7192” posted on the first page of the website. Users were able to download the music for free.
Rockafeller spent her childhood in an environment permeated by music due to the fact that both her father and her brother, Terry Paholek, were actively involved in the music scene in Edmonton and owned their own home studio. She moved into a group home when she was 15 years old, and that is when she started rapping.
She was at a party with some other rappers when they came up with the idea that she needed a new name. They came up with the pseudonym “Nova Rockafeller,” and they gave it to her. Rockafeller was reared in Jamaica; she spent a quarter of the year there from the age of 3 to 9 years old and lived there full-time from the age of 9 to 14 after her family began a water sports business there. Rockafeller was born in Edmonton, although she was raised in Jamaica.
She also spent a short time living in the city of Toronto and in the city of New York. When she was a teenager, she quit high school and started rapping during a challenging time in her life that was spent sleeping at the Edmonton Youth Emergency Shelter and living in a succession of group homes. During this time, she was moved around a lot.
Her ex-boyfriend was the one who initially sparked her interest in rapping and led her to explore the online battle rap communities. Rockafeller relocated to New York and obtained a recording contract with Mercury Records when the record label took notice of her.
The record label would eventually evolve into Island Records, and then Def Jam after that. After three and a half years of working together, her contract with Def Jam was terminated when the firm fired her without prior notice. The news came to her attention when her landlord informed her that the corporation would no longer be responsible for paying her rent. Rockafeller had been working on an album titled Accidentally Gangster before the label decided to drop her as a recording artist; however, the project was scrapped.
Rockefeller introduced her jewelry collection titled “Toys on Chains” in the year 2012. Rockafeller started to make a name for herself in the mainstream music industry in 2015, while she was still signed to Def Jam. She did this with her track “Made in Gold” which made it into the top 20 on Sirius Top Hits. The teen comedy film “The Duff” incorporated the track in one of its scenes.
In addition, her music has been heard on the television shows Siesta Keys, Dancing with the Stars, and Bad Girls Club. During that same year, she performed at SXSW, Riot Fest, and the Gathering of the Juggalos in addition to touring with Set it Off and All Time Low. Rockafeller has been linked to the Insane Clown Posse and the Juggalo movement ever since she made an appearance at the Gathering. She also gave a performance at Violent J and Lil Eazy E’s first solo charity tour together.
In 2017, Rockafeller started a relationship with Tom MacDonald, a Canadian rapper. They collaborated to form the band GFBF and began the songwriting process. Rockafeller threw her full weight behind Macdonald and his work after the publication of “Dear Rappers” and his subsequent rise to fame. She shot and directed all of his music videos released after 2017, developed his website, co-wrote hooks, and assisted him in navigating the music industry and avoiding the problems she encountered in the industry herself. Additionally, it is well known that Nova dated R.A. the Rugged Man.
Rockafeller teased the debut of her newest studio album, Scared of Heights, in 2021 by releasing “Hey You” her first solo single in more than two years. Over two hundred and fifty thousand people viewed the movie in just a single day.
