About Mike Love
In the early years of the young garage band that would later become known as the Beach Boys, Love played some basic saxophone parts. This band began as the Pendletones. In addition, he established himself as a collaborator with Brian Wilson in the band’s original songs, along with his neighbor Gary Usher, local DJ Roger Christian, and other individuals.
Emily Wilson, also known as “Glee” was Michael Edward Love’s mother. He was born in 1919 and passed away in 1979. Emily was a sister of Mary and Murry Wilson and had lived in Los Angeles since the early 1920s. In 1938, Glee wed Edward Milton Love (1918-2013), who was the son of the founder of the Love Sheet Metal Company. Edward Milton Love had passed away in 2013. In 1941, the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles was the location of the birth of Mike Love, the first of his parents’ six children.
At the beginning of 1964, Brian Wilson moved the Beach Boys away from making music with a beach theme. In November of that year, Love expressed to a reporter from Melody Maker that he and the other members of the band intended to expand their musical horizons outside the realm of surf music and steer clear of dwelling in the band’s illustrious past. Love described Smile as “good stuff” and “a fantastically-produced album” in the 1970 edition of Pop Chronicles, adding that “it’ll come out, eventually.” According to Brian, Love’s resistance to the lyrics was not the cause of the dissolution of the band Smile. On the other hand, the album’s lyricist, Van Dyke Parks, said that Love was responsible for putting “a stop” on the record. Love was quoted by business colleague David Anderle in an article that was published in Rolling Stone in 1971. The comment was, “Don’t fuck with the formula”
In 1978, he was a co-founder of the band Celebration, which was responsible for the hit track “Almost Summer” in the United States (co-written with Brian Wilson and Jardine). His debut album as a solo artist, Looking Back with Love (1981), was produced by Curt Boettcher and was released the following year.
Brian was sued for defamation in 1992 by Love, Jardine, and other members of the Wilson family in relation to statements that were made in Brian’s memoir, Would not It Be Nice: My Own Story, which was published in 1991. The dispute was resolved amicably by the publishing company HarperCollins, who paid Love $1.5 million to settle the matter. The lawsuit that Love filed against Brian was the first of many that Love would launch against him.
Love has been married to Jacquelyne Piesen since 1994, and the couple has a total of eight children between them, two of which were born during their marriage and six of which were born during Love’s four prior marriages. He currently makes his home in Incline Village, Nevada, which is situated on the northern coast of Lake Tahoe. Love is a vegetarian who participates in ancient Hindu rituals, practices Transcendental Meditation (TM), and teaches TM. He also wears Indian Ayurveda rings.
The Beach Boys: An American Family was a two-part television miniseries that depicted the story of the Beach Boys and was first broadcast on ABC in the year 2000. Stamos was the one who produced it, and it received criticism for having historical mistakes. Love served in the role of consultant for the movie. The director was criticized by some reviewers of having the film present unfavorable depictions of Brian and Smile partner Van Dyke Parks and overstating the role that he played in the band Smile.
Love got back together with Brian, Jardine, Johnston, and David Marks in 2011 to work on a new Beach Boys album and a tour celebrating the band’s 50th anniversary, which began in 2012. Following the conclusion of the reunion tour in September 2012, Love and Johnston stated, via a press statement, that the Beach Boys will revert to the lineup consisting of only Love and Johnston, without Brian, Jardine, or Marks. Love made a personal contribution of $100,000 to the American Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Katrina, and he assisted the organization in raising an additional $250,000 in funds. He was a member of the board of directors at the Lake Tahoe School in Incline Village, Nevada, and he was responsible for generating more than one million dollars for the school’s benefit.
