About Mike Jarvis
American collegiate basketball coach Michael D. Jarvis was born on April 12, 1945, and his estimated net worth is $2 million. Mike Jarvis most recently served as Florida Atlantic University’s men’s basketball team’s head coach.
Mike Jarvis, who replaces Rex Walters, who succeeded Matt Doherty, is the most recent in a line of prominent coaches hired by Florida Atlantic University.
I sense a recurring trend here.
This Sun Belt conference school appears to be being utilized by coaches as a launching pad for higher positions or as a way to restart stalled coaching careers. It was successful for Doherty, who after a contentious tenure at North Carolina was out of a job but used a brief time at FAU to land the head coaching position at Southern Methodist.
To restore his reputation, Jarvis might have to put in a little more effort.
Jarvis established himself in the high school levels, and Boston University hired him after he coached Patrick Ewing and Rumeal Robinson, two future stars of the NCAA, at Cambridge Ringe and Latin High School. After five seasons and two NCAA trips with the Terriers, he transferred to George Washington University in 1990, where he led his 1993 squad to the Sweet 16 under the guidance of a raw center named Yinka Dare.
In 1998, Jarvis achieved success when he succeeded the divisive Fran Fraschilla as head coach at St. John’s. The Big East league, the New York media market, and one of the historically most successful NCAA programs made it a fantastic possibility. And initially, everything looked to be going well as Jarvis led a squad that included recruits from the Fraschilla to the Elite Eight, including Ron Artest and Erick Barkley. He was unable to maintain his momentum, though. Jarvis’ talent for alienating city high school coaches and recruits became legendary in New York basketball circles, and the pipeline of elite local prospects like Artest and Barkley all but dried up.
During the 2003–2004 season, the matter came to a head. Just six games into the season, Jarvis was let go.
According to ESPN, it was revealed that a basketball staff member had paid center Abe Keita $300 a month for his four-year career.
43 victories that Keita was a part in for the Red Storm were forfeited, along with a trip to the 2002 NCAA tournament and the 2003 NIT championship, and the team fell into a hole from which current coach Norm Roberts is still trying to climb out.
While doing nothing but biding his time as a TV and internet expert, Jarvis appeared to be impenetrable.
This fall at FAU, it will be interesting to see whether the successful motivator from GW or the person who dismantled a once-proud St. John’s program appears.
