About Lupillo Rivera
Rivera’s first career choice was in the food and beverage industry. However, Pedro Rivera Sr. was the proprietor of a record company and a studio where his son would later record (Cintas Acuario). When a contracted singer didn’t show up for a recording session, Rivera hired his son Lupillo to work in the studio so that he could get some real-world business experience. Lupillo was tasked with scouting up-and-coming talent at the area’s watering holes so that his father’s business could sign some of the performers. After nearly a decade in the industry, in 2010, Rivera was nominated for a Grammy and a Latin Grammy for the album Tu Esclavo y Amo.
Rivera’s parents, Rosa Saavedra and Pedro Rivera, had him in Long Beach, California. His parents, Pedro Jr. and Gustavo, together with their newborn son, Lupillo, relocated to Long Beach, California, where Lupillo would later attend and graduate from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1990.
Jenni Rivera, a singer and actress who predeceased him, was his older sister. Moreover, he is a second cousin once removed of both the musician Juan Rivera and the reverend Peter Rivera. He is the uncle of Chiquis Rivera, Jacqie Campos, Michael Marin, Jenicka Lopez, and Johnny Lopez, as well as the brother-in-law of Esteban Loaiza.
Lupillo Rivera earned the nickname “El Torito” when he first began performing. El Toro del Corrido was his nickname when he became widely recognized. His uncle, El Toro Rivera, was a professional boxer who achieved moderate fame in Mexico. In 1999, Lupillo started performing under his given name. Sony Discos was already his new home at that point. After that, he started to gain a lot of attention. He won a Premios lo Nuestro in 2001.
After seven seasons on Televisa, the rights to the Mexican singing competition La Voz were purchased by TV Azteca in 2019, and he joined the show as a coach for its inaugural season.
