About Jim Davis
Davis was employed by an advertising agency prior to the creation of Garfield. In 1969, he began working as an assistant on the comic strip Tumbleweeds, which was written by Tom Ryan. After that, he produced a comic strip called “Gnorm Gnat,” which was published in the newspaper The Pendleton Times in Pendleton, Indiana, for a period of two years. Davis was unsuccessful in his attempt to sell it to a national comic strip syndicate because an editor informed him, “Your art is good, your “gags” are “great,” but bugs—nobody can relate to bugs!”
On July 28, 1945, James Robert Davis made his debut into the world in Marion, Indiana. Davis spent his childhood in Fairmount, Indiana, on a small Black Angus cow farm with his family, which included his father, James William “Jim” Davis, his mother, Anna Catherine “Betty” Davis (née Carter), and his brother, Dave Davis. Davis’s parents met when they were both working as teachers.
After his run in with the editor at the national comic strip syndicate, Davis began looking back over his old comic strips. He was still a staunch believer that bugs could be amusing, so he took note of how Snoopy was not only a scene stealer in the Peanuts comic strips, but that he was also a far greater commercial success than his owner Charlie Brown. He came to the conclusion that there were already too many canine characters in the comic book industry and chose to center the next installment of his strip around a cat protagonist instead.
After that, Davis produced a strip in The Pendleton Times titled Jon from 1976 until the beginning of 1978. This strip would eventually become Garfield and began being distributed to 41 newspapers via syndication on June 19, 1978. As of the year 2008, it was syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and was read on a daily basis by approximately 300 million people.
Davis is the creator of the barnyard comedy comic strip “U.S. Acres,” which debuted in the 1980s. Orson’s Farm was the name that people used for the strip while they were not in the United States. Additionally, Davis and Brett Koth created a comic strip that ran from 2000 to 2003 and was based on the Mr. Potato Head toy.
Davis lives in Albany, Indiana, which is also the location of his firm, Paws, Inc., which he founded in 1981. There, he and his employees make Garfield. Nearly fifty artists and license administrators are employed by Paws, Inc., and they collaborate with agents located all over the world to manage the massive licensing, syndication, and entertainment empire associated with Garfield.
To encourage reading and writing in young people, Davis established the Professor Garfield Foundation. Some of the works that have had an impact on him are Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois by Mort Walker, Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, Steve Canyon by Milton Caniff, and B.C. by Johnny Hart.
Davis has been married twice, the first time to a woman named Carolyn Altekruse. Carolyn was allergic to cats, although the couple did have a dog named Molly. Davis wed Jill on July 16, 2000, and Jill already had two children from a previous marriage. Davis adopted both of Jill’s children.
Davis made the announcement in December 2019 that he will be hosting weekly auctions for every hand-painted Garfield comics that were produced between the years 1978 and 2011. According to Davis’s explanation, he began making comics digitally with the use of a graphics tablet in the year 2011. Davis was faced with the challenge of deciding what should be done with the older comics that were still locked away in the climate-controlled safe.
Davis completed the sale of Paws, Inc. to the media company ViacomCBS in the year 2019.
