Legendary running back Jim Brown raced over, around, and through defenders on his route to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and is widely regarded as one of the top players in NFL history. He met all the requirements for a player at his position. He was large and powerful. He was nimble and evasive.
Brown was reportedly characterized to as “a fullback who played halfback.” by former NFL coach George Allen due to his size, strength, speed, and tough style of play. His presence on the football field has been compared by some as that of a man among boys. Simply put, Brown outplayed his opponents game in and game out, dominating them unlike any other running back before or since.
Incredibly, during his nine seasons in the NFL, Brown never missed a game. He was an eight-time All-Pro and was selected to the Pro Bowl each year. He at least 1,000 yards rushing seven times, and another season he had 996 yards. Remember that he did this when the NFL played 12 or 14 games every season.
Eight times, Brown was the league’s leading rusher. In 1963, he set the single-season record with 1,863 yards. By dominating the league in running touchdowns five times, he also established a record.
Brown had recorded the most rushing yards (12,312) and combined net yards (15,459) of any running back in history at the time of his retirement. The fact that he has the highest career average of any running back with more than 750 carries—5.2 yards per carry—is perhaps most impressive.
Throughout his playing career, Brown won the NFL Rookie of the Year award, three NFL MVP awards, and three Pro Bowl MVP awards. Along with Bill Hewitt, Frank (Bruiser) Kinard, Vince Lombardi, Andy Robustelli, Y.A. Tittle, and Norm Van Brocklin, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
