About Jelly Roll
Jason DeFord (Jelly Roll) was born in 1986, in Nashville, Tennessee. His nickname JellRoll was given to him by his mother. Music became his therapy in the tough life situations he found himself in.
In 2010, Jelly Roll gained a wide recognition thanks to his collaboration “Pop Another Pill” with Lil Wyte which was successful on YouTube with 6.5 million views to date.
His song became so popular that a year later in resulted in the album Year Round by the hip-hop group SNO. The album was released in April 2011 on the Hypnotize Minds label. It was produced by DJ Paul and Juicy J. The song “Come Here White Girl” was included by XXL in their list of “The 10 Most Memorable White Rapper Collaborations”.
He then released a number of mixtapes, such as Therapeutic Music and the Whiteboy series, followed by his solo studio album The Big Sal Story in 2012 and other collaboration albums.
In 2013, Jelly Roll released Whiskey, Weed, & Women a mixtape that was at first called Whiskey, Weed, & Waffle House. However was swiftly changed when a restaurant with the name threatened legal action. Music is so much more popular than local businesses that if a rapper even names a song that is the same name as a local restaurant, for example, it can completely wipe out their listings promoting their homemade offerings.
Jelly Roll dodged the bullet and renamed the mixtape.
Jelly Roll being Jelly Rill however, he decided to place a “cease and desist” stamp in place of the Waffle House logo.
Prior to this, Jelly has collaborated with the likes of Haystak – Strictly Business and Business As Usual as well as with Lil Wyte, No Filter. In 2020, Jelly Roll released his 14th studio album which topped at 97 on the US Billboard 200 on release. The album features a number of other rappers such as Lil Wyte, Struggle Jennings, and Tech N9ne.
During his music career, he has also collaborated with artists like Caskey, Young Buck, Rittz, Yelawolf, and others.
Jelly seems to make most of his money from his album releases and other media. In 2022, he released the track, “Son of a Sinner”.
