Mikey Way, Gerard’s brother and future bassist in My Chemical Romance, and Gerard were influenced by bands like Iron Maiden, The Misfits, Danzig, Black Flag, Queen, Pulp, Blur, Morrissey, and The Smiths when they were teenagers. A guitarist Way started his career. At the age of eight, his grandmother gave him his first guitar, and he quickly formed many bands, including Ray Gun Jones and Nancy Drew, in which he and future bandmate Ray Toro would play. After a string of failures, including being fired from a band for being a poor guitarist, he decided to focus on his art instead.
Way, son of Donna Lee (née Rush) and Donald Way, was born on April 9, 1977 in Summit, New Jersey. He has roots in both Italy and Scotland. He and his sibling, Mikey Way, grew up in Belleville, New Jersey, and Way started performing publicly as early as the fourth grade, when he was cast as Peter Pan in a school musical. Way, then 15 years old, was robbed at gunpoint. In an interview with Rolling Stone published in April of 2008, he said, “I got held up with a .357 Magnum, had a gun pointed to my head and put on the floor, execution-style.”
At the tender age of sixteen, Way attempted to pen a comic book series for Hart D. Fisher’s Boneyard Press in 1993 under the title On Raven’s Wings. Way and Joe Boyle produced the animation The Breakfast Monkey in 2001. They took the idea to Cartoon Network, but the network ultimately decided not to use it because of the similarities between their proposed show and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
On May 5, 2007, Dark Horse Comics distributed a special edition celebrating Free Comic Book Day that featured the first installment of Apocalypse Suite. Way’s work on the comic book story The Umbrella Academy began in 2007. The original edition was written and illustrated by Way, but the artwork in the first volume, Apocalypse Suite, was redone by cartoonist Gabriel Bá.
Backstage during the final stop of the Projekt Revolution tour on September 3, 2007, Way married Lyn-Z, bassist of Mindless Self Indulgence. The low-key ceremony was done by a member of the Live Nation touring staff who is also a minister. The 27th of May, 2009, marked the arrival of their daughter. They currently make their home in Los Angeles.
Hypnagogic States is an extended play (EP) released in 2008 by Way and musical project Julien-K. It features a remix of “Sleep When I’m Dead” by The Cure. The International Red Cross will receive 100% of the EP’s sales proceeds.
To accompany the release of the director’s cut of the film sequel to the critically acclaimed video game series, Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, on Blu-ray in early 2009, Way collaborated with Japanese singer Kyosuke Himuro to compose a new theme song for Advent Children Complete. The lyrics were written by him and he sang them with Himuro.
Way has been a huge fan of the British rock band LostAlone for a long time, and he served as executive producer on their second studio album, I’m a UFO in This City (2012).
The first issue of the series was scheduled to debut on Free Comic Book Day in 2013, as was revealed during the 2012 New York Comic Con. This show expanded upon ideas presented in the album by My Chemical Romance with the same name. My Chemical Romance confirmed their breakup on March 22, 2013.
Way unveiled his Tumblr page in May 2014, where he shared the news that he had signed with Warner Bros. Records as a solo artist and was working on his debut solo album. Gerard Way said on December 21st, 2013 that he and artist Gabriel Bá would be starting work on issues #3 and #4 of the Umbrella Academy comic book series in the new year.
In 2013, Way co-directed and co-wrote the season two finale of The Hub original series The Aquabats! Super Show! alongside series co-creators Christian Jacobs and Jason deVilliers for his first foray into television directing. Way’s issues with his gender identity became public knowledge in interviews and online posts beginning in 2014.
Way headlined an event in Melbourne in addition to appearing on the main stage at the 2015 Soundwave music festivals in Australia in February and March. Andy Black, lead singer of Black Veil Brides, released his solo album The Shadow Side in 2015, and it featured a song titled “Louder Than Your Love” that Way co-wrote and sang backup on.
Way has been working on the Spider-Man spinoff series Edge of Spider-Verse since 2014, and in that year it was revealed that he will be Marvel’s newest writer.

Way posted on Reddit in 2015 that he and comedian Joe Rogan have a second cousin, once removed. The songs “Don’t Try” and “Pinkish” by Hesitant Alien were released exclusively through Way for Record Store Day in 2016.
Way’s first major solo single in over two years, titled “Baby You’re a Haunted House” was released on October 28, 2018. Continuing their partnership, Way and Toro dropped a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter” on January 24. Trailer for Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy TV series, which features Way’s novel, was also published on the same day, and features a song from the album.
It was in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that his co-created character, Peni Parker, made her debut. Way has been the executive producer of the Netflix show based on The Umbrella Academy since 2019. During a podcast episode released in October of that year, Rogan finally admitted it. Even so, he added, the two had never met.
My Chemical Romance announced their reunion on October 31, 2019, along with a concert on December 20 in Los Angeles and a new product line. The band later announced that they would be touring the Americas, Oceania, and Japan in 2020. The COVID-19 epidemic forced the trip to be rescheduled until 2022. Way’s original tune “Here Comes the End,” which features vocals by Judith Hill and premiered on July 8, 2020, can be heard on the second season of The Umbrella Academy.
March of 2022 saw Way and Matt Heafy (Lead Vocals/Guitar) of Trivium featured in Rnin by Ibaraki. Gerard Way, has released twelve tracks as a solo artist, including one studio album, one EP, and eleven singles. After the breakup of his former rock band, he embarked on a solo career.
