About George Takei
Takei launched his career in the late 1950s in Hollywood by giving voiceover for characters in the English dubbing of the Japanese monster films Rodan and Godzilla Raids Again. He made an appearance in the television anthology series Playhouse 90, as well as the episode of Perry Mason titled “The Case of the Blushing Pearls” both of which aired in the year 1959. Additionally, he appeared in Hawaiian Eye during the 1960–1961 season a few times, including an episode with the same name as Thomas Jefferson Chu.
Hosato Takei was born on April 20, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, to Japanese American parents Fumiko Emily Nakamura born in Sacramento, California and Takekuma Norman Takei born in Yamanashi Prefecture) both of whom worked in real estate. Takei was given the name Hosato. Takei’s paternal grandfather gave him the name George in honor of King George VI of the United Kingdom, who was crowned in 1937, not long after Takei was born. His father gave him the name.
The Twilight Zone episode “The Encounter” from 1964 had him as the lead role, in which he played a Japanese-American gardener. When the series was being syndicated, CBS decided that the episode with the theme of anti-Japanese sentiment should not be included because it was “too disturbing” After its initial broadcast, “The Encounter” was not shown again until 1992, when it was included in a compilation of Twilight Zone episodes known as Treasures of the Twilight Zone and made available on video.
Takei was cast as the astrosciences physicist Sulu in the second pilot for the original Star Trek television series that was produced in 1965 by Gene Roddenberry, the show is producer. Takei continued in his role as Sulu, who by this point had been promoted to the position of ship’s helmsman, after NBC decided to air the series.
Since then, Takei has participated in a wide variety of television and film productions, including a reprise of his role as Sulu in Star Trek: The Animated Series, which ran from 1973 to 1974, and in the first six Star Trek films, the most recent of which elevated his character to the captain of his own starship. In 1979, Takei and Robert Asprin collaborated on the writing of the science fiction novel titled “Mirror Friend, Mirror Foe.”
Takei was one of six actors, including Jonathan Frakes, Kate Mulgrew, Michael Dorn, Avery Brooks, and Majel Barrett, who lent their voices to the video game Star Trek: Captain’s Chair, which was released in 1997. Takei reprised his role of Captain Hikaru Sulu when the player visited the bridge of the original Enterprise in the game. During the summer of 2007, Takei portrayed Sulu in the episode “World Enough and Time” of the fan-made Internet series Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II.
Takei’s first appearance on Heroes was in January of 2007, in which he played the role of Kaito Nakamura, a prosperous Japanese businessman and the father of one of the main characters, the time- and space-traveling Hiro Nakamura, who also happens to be a die-hard fan of Star Trek. Another reference to the Star Trek series is made when the license plate of the limo in which Takei makes his debut, “Distractions,” reads “NCC-1701.” This is the episode in which Takei makes his first appearance. He was a guest on the show for all four of its seasons.
Takei made the announcement that he and Altman would be getting married on the 16th of May, 2008. They made history in West Hollywood by becoming the first same-sex couple to file for a marriage license in the city. On June 17, not long after Takei and Altman got their marriage license, they announced their engagement to the public by holding a press conference in front of the city auditorium in West Hollywood. On September 14, 2008, they exchanged wedding vows.
Takei was the first leading actor from Star Trek to appear in a Star Wars production, making his debut as the Neimoidian general Lok Durd in an episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2009. This marked the first time a Star Trek actor had a significant role in a Star Wars production.
In 2010, Takei helped encourage the use of online applications for Social Security benefits by recording a series of public service announcements for the Social Security Administration (SSA). Takei and Altman were the second same-sex couple to compete on the British game show All Great Mr. & Mrs in February of 2010, however they were ultimately defeated by rugby star Phil Vickery and his wife Kate.
In 2011, he had an appearance alongside his husband Brad Altman in the British television program All Star Mr & Mrs, which was hosted by Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton and broadcast on ITV. During the twelfth season of “The Apprentice,” Takei participated as a celebrity contestant. In the third episode, which aired on March 4, 2012, he was dismissed from his position.
Takei appeared as a guest judge in the 2013 season of the TBS reality show King of the Nerds, in which he was one of the three people who evaluated the contestants in the cosplay category. To Be Takei, a documentary directed by Jennifer Kroot and starring George Takei, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2014. In addition to that, he was a participant in the documentary film Do I Sound Homosexual?, which was directed by David Thorpe and focused on the stereotypical speech patterns of gay males.
It Takes Two is a web series that he and Altman starred in and was uploaded on YouTube by him and his company in 2015. is referred to be a “parody-scripted reality series” and it also incorporates aspects of Internet culture. There were nine episodes total in the series. During the beginning of 2017, Takei appeared in a number of television ads for the chain restaurant Pizza Hut.
In June of 2021, the dean of the United States Air Force Academy, Brigadier General Linell Letendre, made the announcement that Takei’s book, They Called Us Enemy, which details both Takei’s struggle with internment and understanding of American democracy, would be part of the Academy’s new reading initiative for cadets and would be required reading for the cadets. George Takei was the keynote speaker at the NCLS Kickoff event held at USAFA on February 23, 2022. He elaborated on his book and discussed how his past influences his future.
Takei is a Buddhist. Zen Buddhism was practiced by both of his parents, whereas Shin Buddhism was followed by his mother. During the time that his family was detained in an internment camp during World War II, he maintained a little shrine there. Following the conclusion of the war, Takei enrolled in the Buddhist Sunday school held at the Senshin Temple in Los Angeles, California. Reverend William Briones presided over the Buddhist ceremony in which Takei and husband Brad Altman exchanged vows and were joined in marriage in 2008.
