He was born on 19th September 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland, as a second son of cellist Dorothy Dorman and orchestral leader David McCallum. When he was little, his family moved to London but early in the Second World War he was evacuated back to Scotland. David won a scholarship to University College School in London, where he played the oboe. He also attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He started his acting career in the 1960s, playing Russian secret agent in the TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
David’s first marriage was with actress Jill Ireland, but she left him for Charles Bronson. They have three sons, Paul, Jason, who was adopted and unfortunately died from a drug overdose, and Val, who is a successful guitar player and a member of the Jackshit band.
