About David Culley
In 1978, Culley started his career as a coach at Austin Peay State University, where he was in charge of the running backs. 1979 saw Culley return to his old mater, Vanderbilt University, in the role of wide receivers coach for the Commodores. The following year, in 1982, Culley accepted a position at Middle Tennessee State University as the quarterbacks and running backs coach there.
Culley received his education at White County High School, where he participated in three sports: basketball (point guard), baseball (pitcher), and football (quarterback). Culley was the first African-American player in the school’s history to hold the position of quarterback at Vanderbilt, where he played for the Commodores.
Culley was hired by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1989 to serve as the offensive coordinator, running backs coach, and wide receivers coach for the school’s football team. After that, Culley took a position at Texas A&M University in 1991 as the coach of the wide receivers. In 1994, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Culley to serve as their wide receivers coach under the direction of Sam Wyche. Wyche was the team’s head coach at the time.
Culley was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996 to serve as their wide receivers coach under the direction of head coach Bill Cowher. This was one season after the Steelers were defeated by the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX.
In 1999, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Culley to serve as their wide receivers coach under Andy Reid, who had just taken over as head coach of the team. During Culley’s stint with the Eagles, the team appeared in five NFC Championship Games, including four in a row from the 2001 to 2004 seasons and one in 2008. Additionally, the Eagles qualified for the Super Bowl in 2005.
Andy Reid, who had been ousted from his position as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles the previous year, was hired as the new head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. Culley was hired by the Chiefs in 2013 to serve as their associate head coach and wide receivers coach.
Culley was signed by the Buffalo Bills in 2017 to serve as their quarterbacks coach under the direction of Sean McDermott, who was hired at that time. Both Culley and McDermott worked as assistant coaches with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 through 2010, under the direction of Andy Reid, who was the head coach at the time.
Culley was hired by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019 to serve as their associate head coach, wide receivers coach, and passing coordinator under the direction of John Harbaugh, who serves as the head coach of the team.
Between the years 1999 and 2007, both Culley and Harbaugh worked as assistant coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles under Andy Reid, who was the team’s head coach at the time. Because of an illness, he was unable to play for the club against the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 15 of the 2020 season.
Culley was given the job of leading the Houston Texans as their head coach on the 29th day of January, 2021. In the long history of the Texans club, Culley is the fourth head coach to hold that position.
