Because of her simultaneous careers as a provocative fashion model and child actress, Shields had already established herself as one of the most famous faces in the United States by the time she became 16 years old. In the cover story that appeared in the February 9, 1981, issue of Time magazine, it was stated that her day wage as a model was $10,000. Shields was featured on the cover of three different editions of Vogue magazine in 1983: the September issue of Paris Vogue, the October and November issues of American Vogue, and the December issue of Italian Vogue.
During that time period, Shields became a frequent goer to the nightclub Studio 54 in New York City. In 2009, a picture of a naked Brooke Shields taken when she was 10 years old and incorporated in a work by Richard Prince titled Spiritual America caused a commotion. Richard Prince included the photograph in his work. After receiving a warning from the police, it was taken from an exhibition that was being held at the Tate Modern. Shields was brought up in the Roman Catholic religion throughout her childhood.
