About Annie Murphy
Murphy attended Queen’s University for a single academic year before moving to Concordia University, where she completed her studies and earned a degree in theater performance. After that, she attended the Canadian Film Centre Actors’ Conservatory to further her acting education. At the age of 22, she made the move to Los Angeles in order to pursue a career in acting.
Murphy made her acting debut in the suspenseful crime drama Lethal Obsession, which was broadcast on television. She continues to act in supporting and bit parts in a variety of other Canadian films, including Story of Jen (2008), Lick (2010), and A Windigo Tale (2007), amongst others. In addition, she has had guest appearances in a number of Canadian television series, such as Rookie Blue and Good God (2012). She has stated that during this time she was a “struggling actress” who “was begging to go in for comedies” despite the fact that her resume mainly included dramatic roles.
In addition, she has had guest appearances on a number of American television programs, such as The Beautiful Life: TBL (2009), Blue Mountain State (2010), Against the Wall (2011), and Beauty & the Beast (2012).
In August of 2011, Murphy tied the knot with Menno Versteeg, a singer and musician who is also the lead singer for the bands Hollerado and Anyway Gang. In 2013, a fire broke out in their house; fortunately, neither of them were hurt, although they did lose most of their possessions.
Murphy was on the verge of giving up acting as a means of making a living. When she tried out for the character of Alexis Rose on the CBC sitcom Schitt’s Creek in 2013, she was offered and accepted the job.
In the year 2020, she recalled, “My home had recently been destroyed by fire, I had approximately three dollars in my bank account, and I had not had a job in close to two years. And I had just messed up my very first screen test—like, really messed it up… I was sobbing my heart out in the Pacific Ocean, and the universe seemed to be telling me that I should not continue to act in this manner. You are not meant to read this! Then, however, just two days later, I was informed that I had been chosen to audition for Schitt’s Creek.” Beginning in January 2015 and continuing through April 2020, she portrayed the role throughout the entirety of the series’ six-season run.
After living in Montreal for six years, Murphy relocated to Toronto, where she co-created and starred in the web comedy The Plateaus, which premiered in 2015 and is about four musicians who are intolerable to be around.
As a result of her work in the show, she was recognized with a nomination for the Canadian Screen Awards in the category of Best Performance in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media in 2016. At the same ceremony, Murphy was considered for the role she played in Schitt’s Creek, which earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
It also earned her nominations for the 2019 Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, and the 2019 Gracie Awards for Best Actress in a Breakthrough Role, which she went on to win. She was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in September 2020 for her work in the show Schitt’s Creek’s last season, which earned her the award.
Care Canada has appointed Murphy to the position of ambassador for their organization. In 2019, she traveled to Jordan to gain a better understanding of Care’s initiatives to advance the status of women and girls in the region. In January of 2021, she made a donation to Encampment Support Network, a charitable organization that assists unhoused people in the Toronto area, from the proceeds of the sale of her very first red carpet outfit.
In February of 2020, she was chosen to play the lead role in the AMC television series Kevin Can F**k Himself, which is a dark comedy. The production of the show was put on hold for a number of months as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, but it was resumed in September of 2020.
In the year 2020, Catherine O’Hara, who played Murphy’s co-star on the television show Schitt’s Creek, and she participated in a holiday advertising campaign for Hudson’s Bay department shops. In addition to that, she was featured in a number of advertisements for the meal-kit company HelloFresh, one of which was a web serial in the form of a soap opera called Hungry Hearts. In January of 2021, she made an appearance in a commercial for the Nintendo Switch video game console. In one instance, she shared the screen with her own mother.
