About Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana was born in Asalia Nazario and Aridio Saldaña in Passaic, New Jersey, on June 19 1978 to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. She was initially raised in Queens, New York, but when she was 9, her father died and her mom moved Saldana and her 2 sisters to the Dominican Republic where they lived with their grandparents for the next seven years.
At the ECOS Espacio de Danza Academy, Zoe studied various dance forms but discovered a love for ballet. When she was 17, Zoe returned to the United States and continued dancing with Faces, a youth theater group, and then with New York Youth Theatre where she was talented spotted. Faces was a youth theatre group that played to provide positive messages to teens on issues like drug abuse and sex. Not only did she gain significant exposure during her time there, but her experience with Faces also brought her immense joy as the group was making a positive impact on young people’s lives, including herself.
Zoe first made a guest appearance in Law and Order in 1999 and in 2000 performed her first big-screen part, appropriately, as Eva Rodríguez, the young and influential ballet Dancer in Center Stage (2000). The next couple of years saw her in a few supporting roles until 2003 when she played Anamaria, an ex-lover of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Saldana’s good looks and talent placed her in various Hollywood movies alongside mega-stars like Tom Hanks in the Terminal, Ashton Kutcher in Guess Who (2005), a send-up of the Spencer Tracy’s classic Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and Dennis Quaid and Mathew Fox in Vantage Point, the superb thriller in 2008.
2009 was a big year for Zoe, as she took on the role of communications officer, Uhura, aboard the Star Trek Enterprise in the remake of Star Trek by JJ Abrams. In December of 2009, Zoe was Neytiri, the ancient warrior in James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar. Thereafter, roles came thick and fast. Zoe returned to Star Trek Enterprise and also starred as Gamora, the green assassin in Marvel’s box-office hits, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. To date, the young and beautiful star has over 40 movie credits under her belt.
As of 2020, Zoe Saldana has an estimated net worth of $20 million dollars.
What makes her so successful?
Zoe is serious about her craft and wants to be known for what she can contribute and not just as a stereotype of how Hollywood sees a certain type of actors. She started her own media company BeSe to promote Latin actors who are under-represented and who are often typecast in certain roles.
Also, seeing her mom fight for her children’s lives under challenging circumstances left an indelible impression on Zoe. Her mother made her become an independent woman, able to survive and thrive in the world. Saldana is also battling against Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune inflammatory disease that her mom and sisters are also afflicted with.
Although Saldana was criticized for her role as Nina Simone, the legendary jazz musican and singer for possibly using darker make-up to appear more black and for being too conventionally beautiful to take on the role, she has hit back saying there is no one way to be black. Indeed, most the criticism was about the way she looked and not how she performed; she did give a credible performance as a Nina during the period of time the film focussed on.
Saldana is married to Marco Perego, a famous Italian artist. She is the mother of the three-year-old twin boys, named Cy and Bowie. Zoe and Marco are known as Zoe Saldana-Perego and Marco Perego-Saldana, a testament to her belief that women should be the equal of men.
