Who Is Zach Galifianakis

Nannies And Strip Clubs And PI’s, Oh My
Every funny man seems to hail from somewhat depressing beginnings and for Zach it was no different. After failing his last college course at North Carolina State University by only one point, for Zach the only logical step was to pack up and ship out to New York City where he began performing stand-up comedy in the back of a burger joint in Times Square. From there, Zach immediately went on to great things: according to the funnyman, he was a nanny, worked in a strip club, cleaned houses, bussed tables and also tried his hand at private investigating. Never lasting at any of these gigs for more than a few months, Zach claims he turned to comedy because he had no other skills. Landing small parts in a variety of Oscar-worthy films like Bubble Boy, Corky Romano, What Happens in Vegas and a handful of others, he played odd roles including a homeless man—twice.
But it wasn’t until he landed a lead role in the 2009 flick The Hangover that he skyrocketed to the level of comic legend. In the comedy, which follows three friends; Phil, Alan and Stu, who are searching for their best friend and groom-to-be the morning after a night of drunken debauchery, Zach plays the awkward man-purse-toting, brother-in-law-to-be. Phil is played by Bradley Cooper and Stu by Ed Helms and was a massive box office success, grossing $467 million dollars for part 1 alone. Part 2 set in Bangkok, Thailand, did even better. The movie grossed $586.8 million world-wide. This was followed up by part 3 which also did well, grossing $362 million.
From there, he went on to land roles in films like Up in the Air, Youth in Revolt, Dinner for Schmucks, It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Due Date—all in just over a year after his success in Hangover Part 1.
Between Two Ferns And Other Plants
But, Zach is more than just a silver screen funny man. He’s been all around the country on stand-up tours, is the title character in a hilarious Funny or Die web series, Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis, and even allegedly smoked a joint on live TV while discussing the legalization of marijuana on Real Time with Bill Maher. There isn’t much that Zach isn’t willing to do and for that, we applaud him…and laugh at him.
