About W.E.B Du Bois
With an estimated net worth of $300,000, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American sociologist, socialist, historian, civil rights activist, pan-Africanist, novelist, writer, and editor. Du Bois was born in 1968 in Massachusetts to a low-income household, yet he enjoyed more privileges than the majority of African Americans born at the time. He did well in school and, at the age of 16, graduated from high school early.
Du Bois acquired a scholarship to study at Nashville, Tennessee’s Fisk University, where he received his bachelor’s degree.
Dubois witnessed the appalling living circumstances of African Americans in the South when he relocated to Nashville. He committed his life to combating prejudice after discovering the bones of a black guy who had been lynched.
Du Bois attended Harvard University’s graduate program in history, where he became the first African American to get a PhD there. He received a fellowship to attend the University of Berlin in Germany while he was a student at Harvard.
Du Bois asserted that racial inequity might be explored via scientific study after returning from his studies in Berlin. He used that concept as the basis for his research, which enabled him to publish multiple volumes about racial strife and American culture.
Academic Works
More than 20 books and 100 academic articles about racial relations are the work of this author. While he was a university professor, he wrote the majority of his novels. In 1897, he was hired as an economics and history professor at Atlanta University. Du Bois endeavored to explain the black experience in America in his book The Souls of Black Folk.
Du Bois taught at the University of Pennsylvania after leaving Atlanta University. He wrote The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study, a well-known sociological tome, when he was there. By speaking with local families, it focused on the economic and social circumstances of African Americans in Philadelphia.
Education Equalization
Du Bois advocated for African Americans’ rights to higher education throughout his life and thought that white people ought to accept responsibility for racial inequity. With William Trotter’s assistance, he created the Niagara Movement, a forceful anti-racial inequality movement.
Du Bois left the United States at the age of 93, dissatisfied with the development of racial conflict there, and moved to Ghana, where he passed away two years later.
