She has been the host of True Beauty, where she has exposed prejudices and counted down the hottest videos on Total Request Live. She is the hostess with the mostess and she hedged her roots as a beauty queen into a job as an MTV VJ, a developing acting career, and a high-profile relationship with Nick Lachey, the ex-husband of Jessica Simpson.
Sweet Home Roam
Vanessa was born in the Philippines to a Filipina mother and an American father who had his head in the clouds (her father was in the Air Force). She never stayed in one place for an extended period of time. Before her parents decided to settle in Charleston, South Carolina, she had lived in California, Nevada, Florida, Germany, and Japan. Her parents’ divorce in 1986 might have been influenced by the constant change in all of their lives.
But even while in her mother’s care, Vanessa would experience yet another uprooting when she got remarried and was forced to go to Turkey with her mother, brother, and Air Force Serviceman stepfather.
The family was once more uprooted in 1990, just as they were establishing down in Turkey, when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, forcing them to flee and return to the United States.
To try again at making a home, Vanessa’s mother did not accompany her children to the country; instead, she abandoned Vanessa and her brother with their father and did not return for them.
Beginnings of a beauty queen
Vanessa was able to establish roots and get involved with the Miss South Carolina beauty pageant after moving in with her father and his new wife and having a more stable home life. Vanessa went on to compete in the 1998 Miss Teen USA pageant after realizing her natural aptitude for performing and with a Miss South Carolina crown already on her mantel.
It should come as no surprise that she won the crown and the title of Miss Congeniality.
Vanessa applied for and was hired as the host of MTV’s Total Request Live from 2003 to 2007 using her incredibly appealing personality.
Vanessa’s employment as a correspondent for the celebrity news program Entertainment Tonight in 2005 came about as a result of her work interviewing artists and ranking the top videos.
True Love’s Beautiful Beauty
Instead of counting down a music video the following year, Vanessa played singer Lachey’s love interest in one. The two began dating and became engaged in November 2010; it appears that the on-screen romance led to an off-screen hookup.
She made her television debut in an episode of How I Met Your Mother in 2008 and afterwards made guest appearances on CSI: NY and Psych. However, in 2009 Vanessa found a full-time hosting position on ABC’s True Beauty, a game show that isn’t quite what it seems as competitors are assessed for their inner rather than outer beauty. Instead of making cameo appearances in a variety of series, Vanessa did this.
Vanessa appears to have a new home in Hollywood with a new rock on her finger and a smash program to boot.
