About Toni Kroos

It is a difficult challenge for a young player to break into the first team of one of the world’s most famous and established sides but Toni Kroos is a rare example of someone who has.

Bayern Munich have enjoyed a long spell of success in Germany and Europe and are renowned as one of Europe’s big spenders but Kroos has gradually established himself as one of the Bavarian side’s most important players since making his debut at just 17 years of age.

German professional footballer Toni Kroos has a net worth of $45 million dollars, as of 2021. Kroos plays as a midfielder for La Liga club Real Madrid and the Germany national team. Kroos plays mainly as a central midfielder, but has also been deployed as a deep-lying playmaker in his career.

A loan spell at one of Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals honed the midfielder’s skills and catapulted him into the German national side and he is now considered one of the best midfielders around.

Quick Facts:

  • Name: Toni Kroos
  • Nationality: German
  • Date and Place of Birth: January 4, 1990 in Greifswald, East Germany
  • Position: Central Midfielder
  • Current Club: Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)
  • Previous Club: Bayern Munich II (2007-2008), Bayer Leverkusen (loan) (2009-2010)
  • International Career: 2010 to present

Bayern Debut:

Kroos began his burgeoning career with his local club Greifswalder SC before moving to Hansa Rostock’s youth setup. Aged 16, Kroos was snapped-up by Bayern and he quickly progressed during the 2007/08 season. He came off the bench against Energie Cottbus in September 2007 and created two goals for Miroslav Klose – at the same time gaining the record for Bayern’s youngest ever first-team player, an accolade since taken by Austrian left-back David Alaba.

Kroos made further inroads in the first-team, appearing in the UEFA Cup and he ended his breakthrough season with 20 appearances for the club.

On Loan At Leverkusen:

A difficult start to the 2008/09 season saw Kroos struggling on the fringes of Bayern’s first-team and he was subsequently loaned out to Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen for 18 months from January 2009.

The midfielder slowly established himself at the BayArena, making just 13 appearances during the first portion of his loan spell but the 2009/10 season saw Kroos make waves in German soccer.
He was a consistent starter and his impressive form earned him back-to-back player of the month awards leading to his breakthrough in the national team picture. Kroos ended the league campaign with nine goals and 12 assists from just 33 games.

Return To Bayern:

On his return to Bayern, Kroos was firmly back as a regular starter but it was the 2011/12 season that saw the player gain prominence across Europe playing alongside his German national team colleague Bastian Schweinsteiger under the management of his former Levekusen coach Jupp Heynckes.

Despite his impressive performances it was a disappointing season for Heynckes’ side as they finished as runners-up in every competition – missing out on the Bundesliga title to Borussia Dortmund, losing to Dortmund in the DFB-Pokalfinal and losing on penalties in the Champions League final to Chelsea.

The arrival of Javi Martinez saw Kroos deployed further forward and it was a landmark season for the club. Bayern announced in January 2013 that Pep Guardiola would replace Heynckes for the following season but Bayern stormed to an unprecedented treble.

However an injury towards the end of the season denied Kroos the chance to play in the big matches meaning he missed out on playing against Vfb Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final and Dortmund in the Champions League final.

Kroos returned from injury and slotted back into Bayern’s team despite the change of manager and picked up Club World Cup, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles.

Germany Career:

Kroos broke into the Germany squad for the first time in 2010 on the back of his impressive performances for Leverkusen and he was selected in their 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He made four substitute appearances at the World Cup before playing a key-role during the Euro 2012 qualification campaign. However Kroos was again used sparingly by Low at the finals.
