Sir Tim Berners-Lee, whose full name is Timothy John Berners-Lee, is an English computer scientist. He rose to international popularity in 1989, after creating the World Wide Web. The following year, while he was employed at the CERN organization (European Organisation for Nuclear Research), based near Geneva, Switzerland, he wrote his very first web browser.
Ever since then, he has won multiple titles and awards including “Order of Merit”, “Order of the British Empire”, and” Fellow of the Royal Society” among many others. Tim Berners-Lee is famous because he invented the WWW (World Wide Web) and played an important role in the development of the web throughout the years. He was born on 8 June 1955 in London, England. He’s the oldest of four children to Conway and Mary Berners-Lee. Both of his parents were also computer scientists that contributed to the creation of “Ferranti Mark 1”, the very first commercially built computer, created in the 1950s.
Tim attended the Sheen Mount Primary School and then the Emmanuel School. He was a trainspotter as a child and also had a passion for computers and other technologies and electronics during his pre-adolescent years. From 1973 to 1976, he studied at The Queen’s College in Oxford, where he earned a first-class Bachelor of Arts in physics. During that time, he created his very first computer from an old television set that he bought from a repair shop.
Apart from his invention, the computer scientist became rich from his work with W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) as well as many other companies and organizations. Shortly after he earned his bachelor’s degree, Tim began working for the telecommunications company Plessey, based in Poole, Dorset. In 1978, he moved to Ferndown and joined D.G. Nash for the creation of type-setting software for printers. By the end of the 1970s, he was able to an estimated $10,000 from his work as an engineer.
In June 1980, he began working as an independent contractor for the international company CERN, which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. During that time, he proposed a project for which he built his own prototype system named “ENQUIRE”. After leaving CERN in December that year, he moved back to the United Kingdom in Bournemouth, where he began working for the company “Image Computer Systems”, thanks to which he earned an estimated $20,000. In 1984, he returned to CERN and began working various jobs at the time.
Since his incredible invention in the 1990s, Tim Berners-Lee became a sensation all over the world.
