Thomas Robert “Tommy” Dewar, 1864 – 1930

Died: 11 April 1930,
Son of John A. Dewar (1846 – 1880) who had founded John Dewar & Sons, Ltd., Dewar was educated at Perth and Edinburgh. His elder brother, John Junior, managed the distillery as “Tommy” traveled the world promoting the family brand. In two years he visited 26 countries. He held a number of offices before election as Conservative MP for St George’s, Tower Hamlets from 1900 to 1906, opposing “pauper immigration” and making a number of statements that are regarded as anti-Semitic. Knighted in 1902 and created first Baron Dewar in 1919, he never married so he was also the last Baron Dewar. He espoused a philosophy called Dewarism which argued that success could be achieved without compromising a joyful life.
